Job summary
We are looking for an Orthodontic Therapist to join our dental department within the General Hospital to provide a wide range of Orthodontic treatment including all extended duties, appropriate to a registered (with the General Dental Council (GDC) ) Orthodontic therapists at the request of the overseeing Orthodontic consultant working within the Health and Care Services Orthodontics department.
The job purpose includes working closely with the wider team to provide care and support to patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and provide a wide range of tasks focused on the assisting in the planning, treatment, and monitoring or orthodontic procedures.
The patient base will predominantly be children/young adults still in full time education referred to the department and deemed as requiring orthodontic with a IOTN of 4 or 5.

Job responsibilities
Based on the General Dental council scope of practice:
Clean and prepare tooth surfaces ready for orthodontic treatment
Identify select use and maintain appropriate instruments
Insert passive removable orthodontic appliances
Insert removable appliances activated or adjusted by a dentist
Remove fixed appliances, orthodontic adhesives and cement
Identify select prepare and place auxiliaries
Take impressions
Make a patients orthodontic appliance safe in the absence of a dentist
Fit orthodontic headgear
Fit orthodontic facebows which have been adjusted by a dentist
Take occlusal records
Take intra and extra-oral photographs
Place brackets and bands
Prepare, insert adjust and remove archwires previously prescribed or where necessary activated by a dentist
Give advice on complex appliance care and oral health instruction
Provide highly specialist Clinical Technical services and advice on the full range of dental appliances
Fit tooth separators and bonded retainers
Keep full, accurate and contemporaneous patient records
Give appropriate patient advice
Possess is a basic understanding of dentistry and orthodontics. This includes knowledge of practices and appliances that help prevent and correct mispositioned teeth and jaws. It's also beneficial to have general knowledge of teeth and gum diseases.
Carries out specialist clinical, preventative & restorative treatments under the prescription of a dentist. The post holder may need to provide direct access to dental care where that care is within their GDC scope of practice, and the individual is qualified competent and indemnified to do so
Develop good communication with all members of the dental teams and referring practitioners. Ensure information reaches all team members and relevant professionals in cases where treatment is shared
Responsible jointly with the Clinical Lead, for demonstrating and further developing the vision mission and agreed values that guide the service in its work
Promote oral health and preventive dental care and assisting in planning and provision of oral health promotion programmes as required
Produce and maintain accurate records of dental care, using computer systems where used within the service and assist with the data collection for service monitoring.
Participate in Clinical Governance Programmes as required by the service including audit, peer review and annual performance appraisal.
Ensure that standards for Dental Professionals are met as required by the General Dental Council this will include demonstration of required Continual Professional Development CPD.
Be registered with the GDC and Jersey Care Commission
Contribute to the continued development of the Orthodontics Service as a whole through contribution at team meetings.

Experience
Essential
- Evidence of continuing professional education, peer review and other clinical governance activities
- Significant post degree and/or diploma experience of
- working as a Dental Therapist and managing own caseload
Desirable
- Evidence of leading clinical governance activities
Qualifications
Essential
- Bsc/Diploma/equivalent in Orthodontic Therapy
- GDC registered as a Orthodontic Therapist
- Registration with Jersey Care Commission (JCC)
- Appropriate DBS clearance
Desirable
- Certificate / Diploma in conscious sedation or equivalent
