Fellow In Medical Education, CT3 or ST 4-6 (at current level) 12 months fixed term Out of Programme Experience
Responsible To: Director of Medical Education, NELFT.
This post is designed to support CT3/ST4-6s who wish to make a commitment to education as part of their career. The 12-months out of programme experience (OOPE) post, based at North East London NHS Foundation Trust, is aimed at those who wish to build on their experience of teaching, develop expertise in educational theory and practice or undertake supervised educational research. The postholder will have a designated educational mentor who will oversee their development as an educator during the placement and co-ordinate opportunities for personal development. A customised programme of training and educational experience will be designed around the needs of the individual. Although an enthusiasm for teaching is a prerequisite, no assumptions will be made about formal knowledge of educational theory or practice. Hands-on teaching will be central to the post, as will a critical engagement with educational issues around providing undergraduate and postgraduate training in a changing context, both nationally and locally.

Main duties of the job
Participants will be encouraged to develop a sustained commitment to education within their clinical career and to undertake a Masters programme in education related to their specialty. This may be the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc at QMUL, or an equivalent part-time programme. Course costs will be supported by the Trusts Medical Education Department. The post holder will attend monthly learning sets at the London Deanery, along with all other Fellows in Medical Education (FME). It is also expected that FMEs will attend the London Deanerys range of faculty development courses, contributing as attendee, participant observer, teacher or co-facilitator (depending on experience and expertise and constraints of each individual course). No additional study leave funding is attached, as the relevant training is provided within the post.

Job responsibilities
Applications are invited from CT3 Trainees and SpR/ST4-6 for appointment to a Fellow in Medical Education (FME) placement.
This unique post offers an exciting opportunity to develop experience and skills as a medical educator. The Fellowship will consist of an out of programme experience for a period of twelve months attached to the Department of Medical Education within North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT)
The role expects the post holder to actively contribute to the development and delivery of the Trust's postgraduate education programme for Resident doctors and other medical professionals.
The post holder will undertake projects in medical education, under the supervision of the Director of medical education, the medical education manager and postgraduate tutors and will be supported to attend a formal university course in medical education, with potential to pursue this to diploma or masters level.
To ensure that the post holder maintains their clinical involvement during the attachment it would be beneficial to carry out two sessions of clinical work per week in a psychiatric subspecialty of choice within NELFT.
The role follows a hybrid work structure where the postholder can work remotely, from the Simulation centre or any other site depending on service requirements.

Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers, and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Goodmayes Hospital.
