Job summary

In this role as a retail driver, you will be a key member of our dedicated logistics team supporting the Income Generation element of Pilgrims Hospices in East Kent.

Main duties of the job

You would be working in pairs to; asses, collect and deliver items of furniture and other donations from customers homes. Using sympathy and politeness when declining non-compliant donations. To supply stock and clear our shops of donations to support the overall retail operation.

The logistics team covers the South East of Kent, our drivers are on the road each day being Door Step ambassadors no day is the same!

Being flexible and pro-active in their approach to each days challenges, working as a team enabling the smooth operation the of Pilgrims Hospice logistics team.

Using knowledge of furniture, coupled with understanding of the Gift Aid scheme enabling Pilgrims Hospice to maximise the value of each donation we receive.

Job responsibilities

The Retail Van Driver/Drivers Mate is a key part of the team, responsible for the day to day collection and delivery of donations, under the guidance of the Warehouse and Logistics

Collect larger items, generally furniture, from our donors homes or business. Collections will be carried out from the various rooms in the home or business

Deliver larger items, generally furniture, to our donors homes or business. Deliveries will be to the appropriate rooms in the home or business, unless a previous agreement has been made to deliver to the ground floor only.

Label and identify the Gift Aid stock in the van so that the donor details are accessible to the shop that goods are taken to.

Assess the suitability and legal compliance of donated goods, using sympathy and politeness when declining non-compliant donations.

Sort the stock and remove un-saleable donations. Categorise the good stock, label and store in a safe and accessible manner.

To be aware of and comply with all Hospice Shops Health & Safety policies relating to the welfare and safety of staff and volunteers.

To be aware of and comply with Trading Standards Legislation

Be Pilgrims Hospices Door Step ambassador, and present yourself accordingly at donors homes or business ensuring that appropriate uniform is worn and kept in a clean condition.

Working to current legislation and internal and external processes and policies, including Safe Handling/Health & Safety training.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of manual handling and the ability to do this on a daily basis.
  • Driving a variety of different sized vehicles

Desirable

  • Demonstrable customer service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A full Drivers Licence suitably endorsed to allow driving of class C1 vehicle

Desirable

  • Experience of delivery/collection of stock through a warehouse/retail environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, personable, able to relate to staff, volunteers and customers.

Other

Essential

  • Able to work flexibly and additional hours from time to time
  • Able to work any five days from seven in a regular shift pattern
  • Physically Fit, and have an understanding of Manual Handling processes
