Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arrisen for a band 6 post on the chemotherpy units. This is a permanant post for 30hrs per week. The sucessful applicant must have expeerience of delivering SACT and must be SACT competent.
Main duties of the job
- Supports the Senior Sister/Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Management and organization of the Haematology / Oncology Unit and the Haematology / Oncology Outpatient clinics
- To provide a holistic, supportive and coordinated service to all patients at all stages of the care pathway
- Supports the Haematology / Oncology Unit as a whole giving cross-site support and cover where appropriate.

Job responsibilities
1. Clinical / Professional
- To work within the NMC code of professional practice, and within policies, procedures and guidelines of Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Trust and local, regional and national guidelines for Haematology / Oncology
- To take a lead and participate in ensuring high standards of nursing care are given and maintained in the Haematology / Oncology Day Unit and act when standards are not met
- Act as clinical role model, ensuring clinical expertise and practice is enhanced
- To take a lead and participate in ensuring the assessing, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualized programs of care is appropriate to the patient journey
- To ensure changes in patients conditions which require the intervention of others and refer on as appropriate within Oncology / Haematology guidelines / protocols
- To clearly present the patients point of view to others, including promoting and protecting the interest and dignity of patients
- Support the Senior Sister/Clinical Nurse Specialist in ensuring the Haematology / Oncology Unit has appropriate Link nurses and support them undertaking that rol
- To have a high level of skill and understanding in the administration and care of patients undergoing chemotherapy. To have excellent phlebotomy and cannulation skills and to take a lead, contribute and be affective in the PICC line service. To ensure that safe practice is maintained with CVADs within the Haematology / Oncology Unit.
- Take a lead and participate in ensuring that documentation, patient held records are completed and clear plan of action is documented in notes and patient is aware of next visit with appropriate forms, travel arrangements, outpatient appointment, nurse led appointment and District Nurse referrals are completed.
2. Management / Operational
- To take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimise risk. Ensuring incidents and near misses are reported, through promoting a no blame culture. To lead by example and participate in ensuring the correct use and administration of local policies and guidelines are adhered to
- To manage verbal complaints and refer on when unable to resolve, encouraging junior staff to be proactive in the management of verbal / potential complaints
- To participate in investigation of incidents / complaints required, including preparing detailed report/ letters to complainants
- To take lead and participate in establishing and maintaining effective communication, both verbal and written and relationships with Multi-disciplinary team across Huddersfield / Calderdale site
- To recognise, prevent where possible, and manage areas of conflict, reporting to the Senior Sister/ Clinical Nurse Specialist if unable to resolv
- To have a high degree of budgetary awareness and support the Senior Sister/Clinical Nurse Specialist in the management of the budget and resources
- Undertake appraisals for team members in line with hospital policy
- To be aware of team members skills / capabilities and be able to delegate tasks appropriatel
- Support the senior sister in the monitoring of sickness/ absence and act accordingly within trust policie
- Take an active role in the recruitment and selection of junior staf
- Act as an innovative and enthusiastic role model, providing leadership, guidance and advice to staff on operational & professional issue
- Attend and participate in meetings as required including providing feedback and disseminating information as appropriate.
- Deputising for Senior Sister/Clinical Nurse Specialists across sites as required
- Be proactive in the development of clinical area, supporting Senior Sister/Clinical Nurse Specialist in business planning process / service development, through contribution of new ideas to improve patient care / experience.
- To ensure effective cross-site working where appropriate

Qualifications/Training
Essential
- First level Nursing Registration on NMC register
- Teaching/Mentoring Certificate / skills, or willingness to work towards certificate
- Responsible for own post basic education to meet the requirements of the service and PREP
- Recruitment and selection course attendance or willingness to work towards
Desirable
- Post registration education in relevant specialty or working towards
- Other Post Basic Qualification or working towards
- Leadership course or willingness to work towards
- Communication skills course
Knowledge, experience & expertise
Essential
- Significant experience as a band 5 registered nurse within a hospital setting
- Significant experience within the field of oncology/haematology and anti-cancer treatment
- Leadership and clinical supervision skills
- Knowledge of future provision of services
- Competent in venepuncture, phlebotomy, IV medication administration and care of central venous access devices including PICC Lines
- Ability to recognise and manage oncological emergencies
- Accreditation in the administration of cytotoxic medications
- Positive role model to all members of the team
- A commitment to providing exceptional levels of patient care in a professional and compassionate manner
