Moorfields Eye Hospital is recruiting a Band 5 Staff Nurse for a 12-month fixed-term role within its specialist Medical Retina outpatient service at City Road, offering an excellent opportunity to develop ophthalmology expertise in a world-leading centre.
The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals with retinal conditions such as AMD, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, and genetic eye diseases.
Key responsibilities include providing ongoing nursing care, supporting patient education, and collaborating closely with senior nurses and the wider MDT, while maintaining standards aligned with NHS quality frameworks.
The ideal candidate is motivated, organised, and flexible, with a strong interest in ophthalmology, good communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a busy outpatient environment.

Main duties of the job
Practice independently and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate, person centred, evidence-based nursing that respects and maintains dignity ensuring that the highest standard of care is experienced by our patients.
Provide nursing assessment of patients/clients. Be responsible for the assessment of care needs of patients and planning programmes of care, implement and evaluate these programmes without direct supervision.
At times will have management responsibility for being in charge of the ward/department and supervising junior members of staff. Provide clinical supervision to other staff, students, and may be responsible for work allocation and checking of tasks of support staff and/or less experienced staff.
Provide health promotion information and advice. Practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity.
Work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees and agencies, service users, their carers and families.
Contribute to the practice development within the clinical care setting and work in accordance with trust policies, procedures and guidelines and be responsible for completing any work-based training associated with the role.

Job responsibilities
1. Carry out clinical practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality current evidence-based care underpins all actions and interactions with patients.
2. Responsible for completing/ undertaking relevant nursing/ clinical procedures and practice underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience. These included a number of basic and advanced clinical skills and procedures, such as assisting in intravitreal injections, stoma management, syringe pumps and infusion, insertion and removal of catheters, cannulas and removal of sutures.
3. Make person centred, evidence-based judgements in partnership with others involved in the care process to ensure high quality care.
4. Act as an advocate for patients, to ensure a patient focused approach to the delivery of care.
5. Ensure patients receive high quality clinical care and a positive patient experience, having regard to their customs, beliefs and ethnicity.
6. Support the development of educational and health promotion materials for patients and their carers.
7. Provide support to the clinical team in the delivery of care ensuring that these are within your personal scope of knowledge and competency.
8. Give concise and clear test instructions to ensure maximum patient understanding, taking into account patients who have visual, impairment hearing loss, physical or mental disabilities, learning difficulties, different age groups cultural differences and non-English speaking patients.
9. Undertake a range of physical observations appropriate to the individuals scope of practice using a range of equipment, recording, reporting and escalating findings and concerns.
10. Educate patients and their families about the proper use of eye drops, self-care of the eye, and promotion of eye health, in addition to general health and wellbeing advice.
11. Use up to date knowledge and evidence to assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care, communicate findings, influence changes and promote health and best practice.
12. Monitor patients progress, ensuring accurate records of all relevant observations and clinical assessments are kept and take appropriate action as indicated.
13. Liaise with and update external agencies when making any amendments to care packages, liaising and communicating with other healthcare professions when required, including but not limited to care needs assessment referrals, continuing health care assessments.
14. Work towards safe and timely admission/discharge plans and or transfer of care from the ward/ service and ensure barriers to discharge/ transfer are identified and acted on appropriately.
15. Work alongside other health care professionals to ascertain treatments and advise on nursing priorities.
16. Have accountability for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to the trust Policy to include the safe administration of medicines, controlled drugs, and intravenous drugs, as required by the clinical area.
17. Deliver planned clinical care, such as patient assessments, immunisations, drug dosage calculations for infusions, and diagnostic tests, while remaining responsive to unexpected patient behaviours, emergencies, or incidents that demand immediate attention.
