Site Checks and Maintenance Volunteer (Tuesday Evenings at Lochwinnoch)

RSPB

Job Description

We are looking for one Out of Hours Site Checks Volunteer to help look after our reserve at RSPB Lochwinnoch with an immediate start on **TUESDAY** evenings.

This role is about maintaining a site presence in the evenings and offers a great opportunity to patrol our trails while enjoying the wildlife on offer. You will be patrolling alongside an experienced volunteer.

Out of Hours Site Checks Volunteers are able to devote four hours on a weekly basis after 5pm throughout 2026. For safety reasons it is important that this team of volunteers are punctual and reliable in their attendance.

These volunteers ensure we have someone visible on site once the reserve staff have gone home. They volunteers are our eyes and ears and patrol in pairs using a Buddy System.

Our nature reserves are very special places for people and wildlife. Right across the UK the RSPB manages woodlands and wetlands, heathlands and meadows. A real mosaic of different kinds of habitats for a wide range of wildlife and they are visited by a range of people out of hours. With this in mind, this role includes the following:

• Greeting members of the public who are on the reserve out of hours as you pass them; being a friendly face. Engaging with anglers.

• Checking paths, trails and outdoor facilities and reporting any issues to the Assistant Warden in a brief email after each shift. Larger issues can be reported to the Site Manager at the time of their discovery.

• Small quantities of litter picking.

• Reporting inappropriate behaviour to the Assistant Warden, Site Manager or to the Police under a limited number of circumstances.

• Small maintenance tasks. Putting right defects when discovered.

Training and support will be provided but for this role the following are essential:

• Reliability and punctuality.

• Excellent attention to detail.

• Good 'people skills', including diplomacy.

• Problem solving skills and common sense.

You do not require any qualifications or experience in a similar role, though these are an advantage.

You will enjoy doing your role in a beautiful wildlife rich setting, the great outdoors will be your place of work and you will be able to take it at your own pace. By talking to visitors as you go along, you'll have the pleasure of helping people learn more about the reserve and the work of the RSPB, or just be a familiar friendly face to our regulars. You will be making a genuine contribution to nature conservation, and you might find it rewarding to safeguard nature in the area you are working to protect. This role will involve some physical activity, so it will enable you to keep your fitness levels high.

As volunteers work in pairs please advise if you already have a "buddy" in mind who could work with you. Each applicant needs to apply separately. Please be brief on the application form.

This role is for over 18s.

Good luck with your application
