Real-life stories

Changing your career track or transferring to a new company needn’t be daunting. We asked some of our valued team to tell us about their experiences of working at Majestic Wine. We hope they inspire you too.

Matt - Sales Assistant, Majestic Wine - Southend

Vintage 2009

Matt spent a long career in financial services, before taking a part-time job with Majestic – or, as he prefers to call it, ‘semi-retirement.’

I’ve always loved wine, so working part-time at Majestic really appealed. No two days are the same. I might be out in the van doing deliveries or putting new stock in the store. But my favourite bit is always talking to customers at the tasting counter: finding out what they like and don’t like.

You don’t have to know a lot about wine when you start – you’ll quickly pick it up. It’s a job that really suits someone who likes talking to people. Someone who gets a sense of satisfaction from giving great service. And the team is great. You’re constantly bouncing ideas off each other and learning from each other. That creates quite a camaraderie. It’s a great fun place to work – and you get a nice staff discount!”

Jill - Sales Assistant and Driver, Majestic Wine - Aylesbury

Vintage 2023

Jill spent most of her adult life working for a New Zealand-based pharmaceutical business. She now works 19 hours a week in Majestic’s Aylesbury store.

“I worked for 36 years and, when I retired, I thought I’d just put my feet up – but I found I was getting a bit bored. So, when the opportunity came up with Majestic, I jumped at it. I’ve always been interested in wine and I wanted something that would stretch me a bit, while also leaving me enough time to pursue my other interests.

I’m contracted for 19 hours a week, but it’s very flexible. If I need to change my days, I usually can – and, if my manager needs cover at short notice, I’m usually happy to step in. What I love about the job is that you never know who’s going to walk in. I really enjoy that personal interaction – getting to know people and helping them find a wine that’s perfect for their occasion, whether it’s a full-blown wedding or a quiet meal at home.

They’ll sometimes ask me questions I don’t know the answers to – but there’s always someone here who does. And wine is such a nice product: everyone’s always happy just to chat. I’m constantly learning and Majestic is really good at giving you the support and resources to develop your knowledge if you want to. I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad shift. In fact, most days, it doesn’t feel like work!”

Nina - Sales Assistant, Majestic Wine - Taunton

Vintage 2019

Nina previously worked in bridalwear, but she’s quickly got to grips with the world of wine – so much so that she recently won one of Majestic’s incentive trips to visit a wine producer in Slovenia.

“It was quite daunting when I started, because I didn’t really know anything about wine. But you pick it up very quickly, just from listening to your colleagues and learning from them. And you never need to worry if a customer asks you something you don’t know – you can guarantee one of your colleagues will have the answer and they’re always happy to help.

My manager has been brilliant and really encouraged me to take advantage of the training resources Majestic offers. Who’d have thought that, five years on, I’d have a level two wine qualification from WSET (wines and spirits education trust)? And that I’d be going on a trip to meet the growers in Slovenia! I do six hours a day, four days a week, which is perfect for someone at my stage of life. And it’s very flexible – if we need to swap hours around, we can.

I love chatting to customers and building a relationship with them. You get a lot of regular customers who come back because they trust you. It’s a great feeling when you recommend a wine they’ve never tried before and they come back and tell you how much they enjoyed it.” – Nina

Mike - Sales Assistant, Majestic Wine - Bromley

Vintage 2019

Mike served as an officer in the army, then spent nearly 30 years with Waitrose before joining Majestic – attracted by the flexible working hours and his long-term interest in wine.

“What I love about this job is that you never know who’s going to walk in, or what they’re looking for. You can take the time to have a really good conversation: find out what they like or don’t like, offer some advice – and maybe help them discover something they wouldn’t have thought about trying. Wine is such a social thing. And it’s really satisfying to feel like you’ve made someone’s day with your recommendation.” – Mike
