This role sits within the Building Safety Briefings Team in the Buildings, Fire and Resilience Group at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). The team plays a central role in supporting Ministers and senior officials by producing clear, accurate and timely briefings and Parliamentary Question (PQ) responses on a wide range of building safety and remediation issues, including a major programme of system reform and cladding remediation.

The role involves working closely with policy teams and Private Offices to ensure complex information is translated into concise and accessible products that meet ministerial and parliamentary needs. It is a fast‑paced role with exposure to high‑profile work, including parliamentary business and stakeholder engagement, requiring flexibility at times to respond to urgent or time‑sensitive requests.

Job description

As the Briefings Officer you will:

  • Deliver clear, concise and accurate briefing products for Ministers and senior stakeholders to agreed deadlines.
  • Assess incoming briefing requests and provide clear direction to policy teams on the material required to address the specific ask.
  • Coordinate the drafting, collation and quality assurance of briefing material, ensuring it is fit for purpose and reflects the latest policy position.
  • Work closely with Private Offices to understand requirements, manage priorities and provide regular updates on progress.
  • Commission and quality assure responses to Written Parliamentary Questions from the House of Commons and House of Lords, ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of briefings and PQ activity to support transparency and audit requirements.
  • Support effective communication across teams by identifying overlaps, gaps or emerging issues within briefing requests.

Person specification

Essential:

  • Ability to produce clear, accurate and concise written material for Ministers and senior officials.
  • Ability to manage multiple requests at pace while meeting tight and sometimes competing deadlines.
  • Attention to detail, particularly when handling high‑priority or time‑sensitive work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with policy teams and Private Offices to deliver shared outcomes.
  • Ability to prioritise work effectively based on changing requirements.
  • Comfort working across a wide range of subject areas and responding to emerging issues.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, occasionally out of core hours and in line with Civil Service flexi‑time arrangements, to support urgent parliamentary or ministerial business.
