Job description

Help shape the UKs AI future by delivering one of the most ambitious infrastructure programmes in government. The Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (AIRR) is building world-class supercomputing and cloud platforms to power cutting-edge AI research. As a Project Manager, youll be at the heart of this mission, turning policy objectives into delivery reality.

This is a unique opportunity to manage complex, high-profile projects that underpin the UKs leadership in AI innovation. Youll lead planning and delivery across major workstreams from supercomputing to cloud services working closely with technical leads, policy teams, and delivery partners.

As a Project Manager, you will:

  • Work at pace in a fast-moving environment, delivering clear, high impact outcomes.
  • Lead and coordinate cross functional teams spanning technical, analytical, commercial, delivery and policy disciplines to drive infrastructure initiatives from concept through to delivery.
  • Translate strategic and policy objectives into clear delivery plans, managing interdependencies across a complex programme landscape.
  • Instil and maintain robust project management discipline, bringing structure, clarity and pace to complex and evolving workstreams.
  • Person specification

    • Lead planning and delivery of AIRR workstreams, ensuring milestones are met. Establish and operate effective project controls, providing clear and timely reporting on progress, risks and issues to governance forums and senior stakeholders.
  • Translate strategic and policy objectives into clear, actionable delivery plans. Lead the development of business cases, drawing on input from technical, commercial and analytical specialists as required.
  • Manage budgets, risks, issues and dependencies across multiple, interrelated projects, ensuring delivery remains on track and aligned with programme priorities.
  • Coordinate suppliers, technical leads and policy teams to ensure alignment across workstreams and effective end to end delivery.
  • Prepare high quality governance papers, progress reports and stakeholder updates to support informed decision making.
  • Ensure delivery is compliant with DSIT programme management standards, assurance requirements and procurement processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement by capturing lessons learned and embedding best practice across the programme.
  • As a line manager, you will be responsible for working with your members of staff to define their objectives, as well as managing their development and performance.

    Essential Criteria

    • Proven experience managing complex, high-value projects in a multi-stakeholder environment, delivering against challenging objectives.
  • Strong working knowledge of project management methodologies (e.g., Agile, Prince2), with the ability to apply them pragmatically in a fast-moving delivery context.
  • Ability to manage budgets, risks, and dependencies effectively.
  • Experience of working with suppliers and delivery partners, including contract and performance management.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and work effectively with a wide range of senior, technical and policy stakeholders.
  • Ability to work at pace, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain momentum in a complex and evolving programme environment.
  • Desirable Criteria

    • Experience working in, or alongside, government or publicly funded research programmes, with an understanding of delivery, governance, and assurance in complex stakeholder environments.
  • Familiarity with delivering or supporting technical infrastructure projects, such as high performance computing (HPC), cloud platforms, or AI/ML research and innovation environments, and confidence working with technical specialists to translate requirements into delivery plans.
  • Must have, or be willing to work towards (and successfully obtain), a recognised Project Management Practitioner qualification (e.g. APM PMQ, PRINCE2, Agile PM, MSP).
  • If not already accredited, must be willing to work towards Foundation or Practitioner‑level NISTA accreditation.
