Job summary

We are looking to appoint to a Part-time Locum Consultant Allergist to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust based at the Northern General Hospital (7 PAs).

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues be responsible for the provision and professional direction of the Clinical Immunology and Allergy Unit and will work flexibly to ensure continuous provision of clinical duties. The new appointee will be responsible for delivery of allergy related clinics only with no duties in respect of immunology related clinics or laboratory work.

The main duties are as specified below:

o To provide weekly Allergy outpatient clinics and to support day case activity within the CIAU.o To work as part of a MDT to determine treatment plans for patients.o To maintain revalidation and CPD in Allergy. o To have a continuing clinical responsibility for patients admitted under your care and for any managerial/administrative arrangements necessary for their continuing care. To this end, the appointee(s) will contribute to the regular meetings of the CIAU Sub-Directorate.o To participate in the Trust's annual appraisal process.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practise.
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Relevant higher professional training
  • FRCPath or Equivalent

Desirable

  • Higher Qualifications in immunology e.g. MD, MSc, PhD
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.

Research

Essential

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
  • Demonstrable research experience

Desirable

  • Publications in Peer reviewed journals.

Clinical experience

Essential

  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in the specialty covered by the post.
  • Broad clinical experience in allergy
  • Demonstrable competencies in allergy
  • A special interest within the field of academic allergy
  • Ability to use Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and other clinical and non-clinical IT systems
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate

Desirable

  • A special interest that compliments existing interests in the department
  • Practice of evidence based medicine
  • Service development and planning experience

Teaching and training

Essential

  • Experience of teaching medical students and resident doctors
  • Experience of contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education

  • Experience of teaching other health professionals
  • Training or qualifications in medical education methods
  • Experience in a teaching role, e.g. lecturer, associate tutor

Continuous Professional Development

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months

  • Understands the systems and structures of NHS Management

Clinical governance and audit

  • Experience in performing clinical audit.
