Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Occupational Health) to join our Health & Wellbeing Service as an Occupational Health (OH) Business Partner.
This is a strategic and clinical role where you will work closely with leaders and managers to support workforce health, wellbeing, and attendance across North Yorkshire Council and external clients. Youll play a key part in enabling a healthy, resilient workforce by providing expert occupational health advice and delivering high-quality, evidence-based interventions.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist clinical advice on fitness for work, rehabilitation, and workplace health risks
- Manage a complex caseload, supporting employees in sensitive or challenging situations
- Work in partnership with managers to address attendance, performance, and wellbeing concerns
- Act as a trusted advisor to leadership teams on workforce health strategy
- Lead and contribute to health promotion and wellbeing initiatives
- Support organisational priorities by contributing to the People Strategy and service plans
- Represent Occupational Health in meetings, case conferences, and cross-service forums
- Ensure compliance with professional standards, legislation, and clinical governance requirements
Essential Requirements
- NMC Registered General Nurse (Part 1)
- Registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Occupational Health)
- Significant post-registration experience in Occupational Health
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Occupational Health practice and services
- Health & Safety legislation
- Experience managing complex casework and influencing organisational decisions
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including handling sensitive situations
- Ability to work autonomously and manage a varied caseload
Desirable
- Experience working within a SEQOHS-accredited service
- Experience in policy development or service improvement
- Mentoring or leadership experience
- Postgraduate or professional development in Occupational Health

Job responsibilities
Health and Wellbeing provides a service for Council employees, Schools and Academies and external contracts. The Health & Wellbeing Service is nurse led; telephone consultation service based at County Hall in Northallerton with by arrangement face to face services provided through on-site clinics.
The Occupational Health (OH) Business Partner works closely with leaders and managers to support organisational objectives relating to employee health, wellbeing, and attendance. The role provides specialist clinical judgement, technical advice, and a range of occupational health interventions in line with professional qualifications and expertise.
Acting as a strategic partner, the role promotes a proactive approach to workforce health and wellbeing, enabling managers to develop greater confidence and independence in managing healthrelated issues. OH Business Partners collaborate with senior managers, within allocated directorates, to deliver healthatwork priorities across services and contribute to the wider People Strategy.
Specialist Community Public Health (SCPH) Nurse for Occupational Health service in-house to North Yorkshire Council (NYC) and to external clients offering advice, guidance and support on work/health matters including suitability for employment, fitness to work and rehabilitation to the required professional standards in compliance with legislation and local policies.
*SCPHN OH is a protected title and can only be achieved by obtaining competencies and sign off by an approved practice teacher or SCPHN OH nurse.

Qualifications
Essential
- Part 1 NMC Registered General Nurse
- Part 3 NMC Registered as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - Occupational Health.
Desirable
- Evidence of Postgraduate and/or professional development in OH related fields.
Experience
Essential
- Expert knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health Nursing and the full range of core Occupational Health services.
- Expert understanding of Health and Safety legislation, the Equality Act 2010, and their application within workplace health practice.
- Proven experience of active participation in Clinical Governance processes, including assurance, quality improvement and clinical audit.
- Significant postregistration experience across all aspects of Occupational Health practice.
- Proven track record of delivering Occupational Health Nursing services in complex organisational settings
- Clinic based work experience in a nurse led environment.
- Recent experience of auditing against Occupational Health standards and contributing to continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrable experience of influencing and implementing changes to clinical protocols and pathways.
- Recent experience of contributing to or leading policy development.
- Proven experience of working in partnership with external agencies and stakeholders to support organisational health and wellbeing outcomes.
Desirable
- Operating in a SEQOHS accredited service.
- Working knowledge of the NYC directorates in order to provide appropriate OH advice and guidance.
