Clinical Responsibilities/Key Responsibilities

This post is offered with a 80/20 split of educational responsibilities (80%) and supernumerary clinical role of the successful candidates choice (20%), subject to discussion with the relevant clinical department.

• Undertake clinical duties equivalent to 20% of working time within a chosen specialty
• Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills
• Contribute to patient care in line with Trust policies and GMC standards
• Participate in clinical governance and audit activities where appropriate
• To deliver high quality teaching to TCMS postgraduate-entry medical students in line with the TCMS curriculum requirements

Education: This post is not recognised by the Royal Colleges for General Professional Training nor by the Royal College of General Practitioners for Vocational Training.

• Deliver high-quality teaching to TCMS postgraduate-entry medical students
• Facilitate Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions
• Develop and deliver tutorials, clinical skills teaching, and simulation sessions
• Support student learning through feedback, mentoring, and pastoral care
• Contribute to curriculum design, review, and innovation
• Participate in student assessment processes (formative and summative)
• Engage in faculty development and educational training opportunities
• Maintain a teaching portfolio

Successful candidates are encouraged to join University appointed Three Counties Clinical Teaching Fellows based in Worcester for CPD and training in PBL techniques. Opportunities to become further involved in TCMS teaching and facilitation will be supported. Support will be available if the post-holder wishes to apply for applicable teaching qualifications.

Management and Leadership

• Successful candidates will be expected to;
• Support the TCMS Educational Site Director in delivering the undergraduate programme
• Contribute to quality improvement in teaching delivery
• Assist in organising teaching timetables and sessions
• Support peer educators and clinical teaching staff
• Participate, as required, in PGME departmental meetings including the Medical Education Board.
• Support specific programmes and/or courses as agreed with the TCMS UG team.
• To be point-of-contact for TCMS colleagues for matters relating to student education.
• To represent the Trust/PGME at internal and external education and academic meetings.

Planning and Organisation

Successful candidates will be expected to;

• To collaborate closely with the PGME Simulation Teaching Fellow, providing mutual support/assistance to deliver high-impact projects/programmes related to education and/or simulation-based education of TCMS medical students.
• To contribute to the design and delivery of teaching programmes for TCMS medical students placed within the Trust.
• Plan and coordinate teaching sessions aligned with curriculum outcomes
• Manage competing demands between clinical and educational responsibilities
• Contribute to structured teaching programmes across placements
• To support broader educational activities across the TCMS, including (but not limited to) teaching programmes, admissions interviews, formative and summative assessments.
• To perform additional duties as agreed with the TCMS Educational Site Director.

Research and Development

Successful candidates will be expected to;

• To receive supervision and mentoring from senior educators in to develop skills in teaching, problem-based learning facilitation and simulation-based education.
• To develop specific skills in problem-based education including facilitation and feedback and support colleagues to develop these skills.
• To research the benefits and educational theories pertaining to problem-based education and embed these into local practice.
• To devise and implement research and improvement activity, with support to publish and/or present work at a national level.
• To network and establish collaborative working relationships with local education providers, including local General Practices, the ICB, other educational institutions and Trust and the University of Worcester.
• Following a training period, the TCMS UG Medical Education Fellow will be offered the opportunity to gain an educational qualification to the level of Certificate or above (e.g. Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education).
• Participate in medical education research and scholarship where possible
• Contribute to evaluation of teaching programmes
• Support innovation in educational delivery methods
• To seek clinical duties/experiences (up to 1 day per week/20% FTE) to support ongoing development needs, to perform these duties in line with broader expectations as laid out in the Locally Employed Doctor Contract/Terms & Conditions of Service, and to organise appropriate specialty-specific educational supervision for these activities.
• Maintain a personal development portfolio.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

• Primary Medical qualification (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent)
• Full GMC registration with license to practice
• Existing right to work in UK visa

Desirable

• Evidence of teaching qualification or willingness to undertake one

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

• Experience of teaching medical students
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• IT skills relevant to teaching delivery (eg PowerPoint etc)
• Ability to provide constructive feedback

Desirable

• Understanding of PBL or student centered learning

Clincial Experience

Essential

• UK clinical postgraduate experience
• Experience working within the NHS
• Interest in medical education
• Completion of Foundation training at the time of job start date
