Job Description
Job Purpose
The HR Advisor provides a proactive, customer-focused HR advisory service across the Hospice, Retail, Fundraising and Communications & Marketing functions, supporting managers to deliver effective people management practices and high-performing teams. Working as part of the People & Organisational Development Team, the postholder works collaboratively with the Head of People, Senior HR Advisor, Volunteer Development Manager, Payroll Officer and HR & Volunteer Coordinator to deliver a professional, customer-focused HR service across the organisation.
The role supports the delivery of the Hospice's People Strategy and People & Pay Strategy by ensuring organisational structures, job descriptions and person specifications remain accurate and up to date, supporting job evaluation activity, maintaining workforce information, and promoting the consistent application of HR policies and procedures. The postholder plays a key role in developing management capability across the Retail Estate by implementing the Retail Manager Development Programme, providing regular on-site support and coaching to Retail managers, and ensuring that payroll information and contractual changes are accurately prepared and submitted within agreed timescales.
Main Responsibilities:
HR Advising:
- Develop effective relationships with managers across Retail, Fundraising and Communications & Marketing, providing timely, pragmatic and customer-focused HR advice.
- Provide regular on-site support across the Retail Estate, working proactively with managers to resolve workforce issues, implement organisational change and
improve people management practices.
Recruitment & Workforce Planning
- Lead recruitment activity across the Retail, Fundraising and Comms / Marketing, ensuring recruitment processes are efficient, inclusive and aligned with
organisational values. - Support managers with workforce planning, succession planning and recruitment forecasting to maintain appropriate staffing levels.
- Work collaboratively with the Volunteer Development Manager to maximise volunteer opportunities and support workforce sustainability.
Employee Relations and Performance Management
- Provide professional advice and support on employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, capability, attendance, probation, flexible working and dignity at work.
- Coach managers to improve confidence in managing people, promoting early intervention, informal resolution and consistent application of policies.
- Escalate complex, sensitive or high-risk employee relations matters to the Head of People, seeking professional guidance from the Senior HR Advisor where
appropriate.
Retail Manager Development Programme
- Coordinate the operational delivery of the Retail Manager Development Programme.
- Working alongside the Head of Retail and Senior HR Advisor, support programme delivery, monitor participation, evaluate outcomes, develop management resources and identify future leadership talent through succession planning.
- Support the delivery of management development relating to performance management, attendance management, recruitment, induction, values-based
leadership and managing difficult conversations.
People & Pay Strategy
- Support implementation of the Hospice's People & Pay Strategy by maintaining the integrity of the organisation's job architecture.
- Coordinate the review and updating of job descriptions and person specifications, support job evaluation activity, maintain records of evaluated posts and identify organisational changes requiring job review.
- Act as the operational custodian of organisational job documentation, ensuring it remains accurate, current and aligned with organisational structures.
Workforce Information, HR Systems & Payroll
- Maintain accurate workforce information through CIPHR and other HR systems.
- Prepare and validate monthly payroll information, ensuring all contractual changes, starters, leavers, contractual variations, sickness, family leave and other authorised payroll amendments are accurately processed and submitted to the Payroll Officer
within agreed timescales. - Produce and analyse workforce information relating to recruitment, absence, turnover, vacancies, equality monitoring and employee relations, supporting
evidence-based decision making. - Support delivery of initiatives arising from the Staff Survey, Investors in People, the People Committee, Wellbeing Strategy and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Strategy.
Policy, Compliance & Governance
- Support the Head of People in delivering strategic HR projects, organisational development initiatives and continuous improvement across the People &
Organisational Development function. - Maintain professional knowledge of employment law and HR best practice and support compliance with safer recruitment, DBS, right to work and associated
regulatory requirements.
General Responsibilities
- Support the Senior HR Advisor on HR projects and organisational initiatives.
- Work collaboratively across the POD Team to ensure a responsive and customer-focused service.
- Participate in organisational projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Degree in Human Resources or equivalent professional experience.
- CIPD registered or working towards registration
Experience
- Experience in a generalist HR advisory role.
- Experience supporting managers through employee relations cases.
- Experience in recruitment and workforce planning.
- Exposure to coaching managers.
- Experience in analysing HR data and producing management information.
- Experience in supporting organisational projects.
- Experience of using HR Information Systems (CIPHR or equivalent).

Salary: £35,000 pa (6 Months FTC)
Location: St Luke's Hospice Kenton Grange (with regular travel across the Retail Estate locations. Hybrid working is available in accordance with Hospice
policy.).
