1. Singapore
In Singapore, bursts of colour await around every corner. Here, neon-lit skyscrapers stand alongside verdant swathes of rainforest and wildlife parks, where visitors can spot exotic animals – such as orangutans, leopards, and Malayan tigers. It’s also home to the world’s largest orchid garden, offering a tapestry of floral blooms, and the iconic Gardens by the Bay, which features an otherworldly light show each evening.
In vibrant neighbourhoods like Little India and Kampong Glam, you’ll find vivid street art and rainbow-painted temples and houses. Foodies can also sample the cosmopolitan cuisine at hawker centres (open-air food courts), where the scents of spicy crab, sizzling satay, and Singaporean laksa mingle in the air. There are also plenty of high-end restaurants for those seeking fine dining.

2. Willemstad, Curaçao
Among the many colourful destinations throughout the Caribbean, the Dutch Island of Curaçao is one of the most vibrant – especially its capital, Willemstad. According to local legend, the buildings here were once predominantly white. But when the island’s governor complained of headaches in the early 1800s, he ordered them all to be repainted with pastel hues to reduce glare from the sun.
Beyond the architecture, Latin, African, and European influences converge to create unique cultural experiences – from snacking on oliebollen (Dutch-style fried dumplings) during the festive season to admiring marvellous street murals. Elsewhere on Curaçao, you’ll find white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. Even the island’s famous liqueur is a dazzling shade of cerulean.

3. Reykjavík, Iceland
Reykjavík is colourful in every sense of the word. You’ll find brightly decorated corrugated homes and a rainbow-painted road, but the thriving cultural scene is where the city showcases its brightest shades. Visitors can see an eclectic mix of local music acts in lively downtown bars, sample traditional delicacies like hákarl or avant-garde dishes at Michelin-recognised restaurants, and delve into Viking history at the Saga Museum and Settlement Exhibition.
However, a trip to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without venturing out of the city. The nearby Blue Lagoon offers milky blue waters for bathing under the sweeping sky, and further afield, black sand beaches strewn with glittering icebergs are mesmerising places to watch violet sunsets. There are also plenty of opportunities to spot unique wildlife, geological formations, and geothermal features.

4. Komodo, Indonesia
This isolated Indonesian island draws wildlife lovers from far and wide to witness its most famous resident, the Komodo dragon. Seeing one of these behemoths in their natural habitat can feel like travelling to prehistoric times – but it isn’t the only reason to drop anchor here.
Komodo is home to some of Indonesia’s finest snorkelling and scuba diving, thanks to its clear waters and diverse marine life – including green turtles and manta rays. On land, the famous pink-sand beach forms a stunning contrast between the shimmering shallows and grassy scrublands. And, a network of lofty hiking trails offers spectacular panoramas of glistening bays and the surrounding islands.
With Regent Seven Seas Cruises®, travellers can combine Komodo with a range of other colourful locations – from Bali and Malaysia to Sydney and Auckland.

5. Cape Town, South Africa
From the awe-inspiring views from Table Mountain to the intricate beauty of native fynbos at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town offers many colourful experiences. Travellers seeking vivid urban scenery will relish Bo-Kaap, a candy-coloured neighbourhood of Georgian and Cape Dutch houses at the foot of Signal Hill. Similarly colourful are the Victorian huts at Muizenberg Beach, a famous surfing spot.
However, if time allows, cruisers would be remiss not to venture into the nearby Winelands. Here, verdant vineyards bathed in golden sunshine lie between craggy mountains and charming towns like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Or, why not set off on a day trip to Aquila Game Reserve to spot lions, elephants, and other fantastic fauna?
6. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
It’s easy to see why the Great Barrier Reef is a bucket list destination for so many. This multi-hued coral mosaic is the largest in the world (it’s the only living thing that can be seen from space). Here, snorkellers and scuba divers can come face to face with thousands of marine species – from electric orange clownfish to graceful whale sharks.
Or why not take to the sky to admire the patchwork of rugged reefs and tropical islands via aeroplane or helicopter? The famous Heart Reef is a top sight, as is Whitehaven Beach, where the tides create a mesmerising swirl of milky white sand and cerulean shallows. When you aren’t exploring this underwater dreamscape, lively seaside towns and cities like Cairns and Airlie Beach, plus countless ivory sand beaches, await.

7. Burano, Italy
Hop on a vaporetto (water bus) from Venice to reach the tiny but striking island of Burano. Here, multicoloured houses with shuttered windows and gorgeous flower boxes line the emerald canals. Legend says locals began painting their homes this way to help fishermen see their way back through heavy fog – but that’s just one of the stories behind this technicoloured town.
Alongside its striking aesthetic, Burano boasts a centuries-old lace-making tradition, which visitors can explore at the Lace Museum or by souvenir-hunting in the boutiques along the Via Baldassarre Galuppi. When you’re finished, why not duck into a trattoria for some fritto misto or a buranello (a local delicacy similar to shortbread)? Many travellers choose to pair their trip to Burano with a stop at nearby Murano, another colourful island in the Venetian Lagoon.

8. Kyoto, Japan
There are so many Japanese destinations worthy of this list. From glorious autumn foliage and the homely glow of paper lanterns to towering skyscrapers cloaked in electric billboards, the Land of the Rising Sun is an explosion of colour. But with its crimson temples housing intricate artwork, geishas wandering the streets in elegant kimonos, and vibrant local delicacies like green tea ice cream, Kyoto comes out on top for us.
The Fushimi Inari Shrine is a must-visit for travellers in Kyoto, where thousands of torii gates form vermilion tunnels along the nearby mountain trails. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove offers otherworldly beauty all year round – but, if you’re here in spring, taking a stroll along Philosopher’s Path to admire the cotton candy cherry blossoms can be particularly magical. For those interested in contemporary culture, Kyoto is also home to Japan’s largest manga museum.

9. Istanbul, Turkey
Spend just a few hours in Istanbul, and you’ll see why we’ve included it on this list of the most colourful cruise destinations. Whether you’re hunting through glittering treasures at the Grand Bazaar, admiring the ornate golden ceilings of the Hagia Sophia, wandering the rainbow-hued streets of Balat, or marvelling at blooming tulips in Gülhane Park, there’s no shortage of striking scenes here.
Straddling Asia and Europe, Istanbul is a confluence of cultures. The minarets and domes of mosques share the skyline with medieval towers and Ottoman palaces. Flavours from the Mediterranean, Balkans, Middle East, and further afield converge to create a unique food scene. On the same day, one might hear the soft sounds of hymns spilling from the open doors of a Christian church and the Islamic call to prayer echoing over the Bosporus Strait.

10. Buenos Aires, Argentina
Buenos Aires is a city that isn’t afraid to live out loud. Performers tango in the streets, local restaurants serve up bold flavours, and eye-catching murals are splashed across the faces of buildings. Often called ‘the Paris of South America’, the Argentine capital serves up sophistication and bombastic flair in equal measure, with each neighbourhood boasting a distinct character.
In La Boca, the colourful tenements of Caminito are a popular photo opportunity, but they also give a glimpse into the lives of Genoese port workers who used leftover paints from ships to decorate their homes. Shoppers can wander around Palermo, where chattering markets unfurl across the plazas, while Recoleta offers architectural treasures like an ornate cemetery and French-inspired mansions.
