1. A Coruña

Perched on Galicia’s rugged Atlantic coast, the compact, walkable city of A Coruña is bursting with beauty and character. 

Long, sandy beaches unfurl alongside one of Europe’s longest seaside promenades. It’s an excellent place to sample Northern Spanish cuisine, with traditional seafood dishes, like Galician hake and octopus, served alongside crisp Albariño wines from the nearby Rías Baixas region.

Step away from the seafront, and you’ll discover labyrinthine medieval streets and a lively cultural scene. The Picasso Museum House offers an intimate glimpse into the artist’s early years, while the Museum of Fine Arts showcases works by masters including Murillo and Rubens.

The city’s creative streak is also evident in its architecture. History fans shouldn’t miss the Tower of Hercules, a Roman lighthouse dating back to the late 1st century AD. And nearby, the 16th-century Castillo de San Antón, once a key defensive stronghold, now houses archaeological exhibitions that trace the region’s fascinating past.

Yet, A Coruña has plenty of modern flair. Nicknamed the ‘City of Glass’ thanks to the distinctive enclosed balconies that line its waterfront buildings, it’s also home to modern marvels. This includes the Domus, an interactive science museum dedicated to the human body housed in a spectacular sail-shaped building.

2. Porto (via Matosinhos)

From the port of Matosinhos, cruisers can easily reach Portugal’s baroque second city, Porto. Undeniably picturesque, it’s home to azulejo-clad façades, an iconic double-decker bridge, and terracotta rooftops stacked above the gently flowing Douro. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, where contemporary creativity mingles with centuries-old heritage.

Architecture plays a big role in Porto’s appeal. A blend of neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, and modern design lends the city an air of grace, whether you’re getting lost in the Ribeira district’s medieval lanes or settling in along the waterfront with a cold glass of Vinho Verde. Porto is also home to one of Portugal’s most vibrant art scenes, from the Bombarda neighbourhood’s independent galleries to institutions like the Serralves Foundation.

Foodies will have plenty to get excited about, too. To tackle an iconic francesinha (a multilayered toastie filled with pork, beefsteak, bacon, smoked sausage, and topped with cheese and a fried egg), you’ll need a knife and fork. Or, for something lighter, pick up some freshly sliced charcuterie at the historic, open-air Mercado do Bolhão.

For seafood, however, it’s worth staying close to your ship. Once the heart of Portugal’s fish-canning industry, Matosinhos is now known for its no-frills, authentic restaurants, where sardines are grilled over charcoal and served straight from the flames.

3. Funchal

Funchal

Madeira is often called ‘the Garden Island’, and its capital, Funchal, certainly lives up to the name. The city cascades down from forest-cloaked mountains to the Atlantic, its cosmopolitan streets threaded with manicured gardens where bougainvillaea, jacaranda, and birds-of-paradise burst into colour.

This lushness is thanks to the island’s subtropical climate, which creates ideal conditions for a remarkable variety of plant life. Some of the best places to see Funchal’s fantastic flora include Madeira Botanical Garden and the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, both reachable via cable cars offering panoramic city views. 

When you’re finished exploring the gardens, take the Monte Taboggan back down the hill towards ‘Zona Velha’ (Downtown). These wicker sledges were once used by locals as public transport, but are now a quirky tourist attraction guided by two drivers typically wearing white clothes and straw hats. 

As for Zona Velha itself, it’s famous for colourful painted doors, ancient chapels, and rustic taverns serving poncha, Madeira’s signature drink made from lemon juice and sugar cane brandy.

If time allows, it’s worth venturing further afield. Madeira’s spectacular levada walking trails lead deep into enchanting forests, while the seaside promenade stretches towards Câmara de Lobos, a postcard-perfect fishing village just along the coast. 

4. Lisbon

Lisbon is one of Europe’s sunniest cities, enjoying around 300 days of clear skies each year. This and its steep gradient make for unforgettable sunsets, best enjoyed from one of the many rooftop bars or viewpoints, like the Miradouro da Graça. Yet Lisbon offers far more than postcard views.

Along the river, the historic Belém quarter is the place to sample pastéis de nata, the city’s iconic custard tarts, still baked to a recipe developed by monks in the early 19th century. Or visit the Belém Tower, a gorgeous 16th-century fortress combining Gothic, Renaissance, and Moorish architectural influences.

Elsewhere in the city, literature lovers can browse the shelves of Livraria Bertrand, the world’s oldest operating bookshop, while history fans may prefer the climb up to São Jorge Castle. Its 11th-century ramparts reward the effort with sweeping views across Lisbon’s rooftops and river.

As evening falls, venture to the atmospheric neighbourhoods of Alfama and Mouraria. Here, mournful performances unfold in candlelit fado houses, often accompanied by a three-course meal, or you can enjoy them more casually over a glass of local wine in a traditional tasca (tavern).

5. La Palma

Also known as ‘La Isla Bonita’, this Canary Island is celebrated for its dramatic natural beauty. Officially designated a Biosphere Reserve thanks to its diverse ecosystems, La Palma offers everything from twisting laurel forests and soaring volcanoes to striking black-sand beaches.

Yet, as breathtaking as the island’s verdant interior is, its small and attractive capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, deserves just as much attention. Here, history buffs can trace the island’s past at the Museo Insular, admire some of the finest Renaissance architecture in the Canaries, or step aboard a replica of Christopher Columbus’s famous ship, the Santa María.

For a taste of local life, head to La Recova, a thriving marketplace selling local produce where you can stop for a refreshing sugar cane juice drink flavoured with rum or settle in for a delicious lunch at the tapas bar.

Santa Cruz’s most iconic sight, however, is the carved wooden balconies running along the Avenida Maritima, each painted vivid colours and festooned with vibrant floral blooms. See if you can spot the little hatches that residents once peered through to watch out for approaching pirates.

6. Cádiz

Founded by the Phoenicians some 3,000 years ago, Cádiz is Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, making it a must-visit if you’re interested in history.

The warren-like old town (casco antiguo) is a good place to start. Here, you’ll find a Roman Theatre dating back to the 1st century BCE, alongside the grand Cádiz Cathedral, its golden dome rising above the city in a blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles. For a different perspective, climb Torre Tavira, an 18th-century watchtower where Spain’s first camera obscura offers a unique way to view the cityscape.

To delve even deeper into the city’s storied past, the Museo de Cádiz is well worth a visit. It houses a treasure trove of architectural relics, including Phoenician marble sarcophagi from the 5th century BCE.

Once the sightseeing is done, unwind in one of the city’s sun-lit plazas with a coffee and tostada (toast with toppings), or kick back on the golden sands of Playa de la Caleta. The beach is famous for its ornate Moorish bathhouse, and it’s a wonderful spot to watch the crimson sun sink into the Atlantic.

Come evening, Cádiz reveals another side of its cultural heritage. Widely considered one of the birthplaces of flamenco, it remains one of the best places to witness this moving spectacle. Pair a performance with tapas featuring scrumptious seafood delicacies like tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters) and cazón al coñac (dogfish in brandy), and you’ll surely have an evening to remember.
