No matter what’s going on in the world, nature and wildlife have an amazing ability to comfort, ground, and inspire us.
This is largely because observing the natural world encourages us to be present – it’s difficult not to be enamoured by the spine-tingling depth of a tiger’s roar, the silhouette of elephants moving across a golden savannah, or the sight of a sleepy sloth hanging upside down in a tree.
Because animals are instinctively connected to the Earth and live according to basic needs, being around them can also promote a sense of calm and perspective that feels increasingly precious in our “plugged-in” age.
So, if you’re thinking about your next holiday, why not choose a trip that gets you up close to some of nature’s most beautiful creatures?
To help make this a reality, we’ve partnered with Titan Travel, a UK-based tour operator that’s been providing award-winning travel experiences since 1978. Offering small group tours, solo holidays, rail journeys, and cruises across more than 50 countries, Titan lets you search for holidays by theme – including nature and wildlife.
Their trips are designed to reach even some of the most rugged and remote corners of the world, combining comfort and expert local guidance that truly brings wildlife and landscapes to life.
With this in mind, we’ve pulled together a list of eight underrated wildlife experiences that deserve more attention, any of which could become the most remarkable moment of your next adventure. You can also browse Titan’s full range of holidays on their website using the button below.
1. Walk amongst giant tortoises on the Galápagos Islands
Giant tortoises offer a rare chance to witness something truly ancient and otherworldly. They move through the landscape with such slow, deliberate grace that watching them feels almost meditative. Weighing up to 300kg and living for up to 200 years, these remarkable creatures have evolved in small island ecosystems entirely free of natural predators, and it shows. In the Galápagos highlands, you can walk right up to them as they graze, utterly indifferent to your presence; a humbling reminder of what the world looked like long before humans arrived.
But the wildlife adventure doesn’t end there. The islands are home to an extraordinary collection of fearless creatures that you can’t see anywhere else. Blue-footed boobies perform their distinctive mating dance, marine iguanas dive into the surf to graze on algae, and playful, curious sea lions might swim right up to you in the water – so keep your camera close!

2. Canoe through the Amazon
Safaris come in all kinds of wonderful shapes and sizes, and while land-based experiences are a popular choice, it’s easy to underestimate just how much can be seen from the water. From a canoe in the Amazon, for example, you can glide through tea-coloured waterways with the chatter of howler monkeys surrounding you, macaws screeching overhead, and the rustle of mysterious creatures rustling through the dense green walls of vegetation on either side.
The Amazon is the most biodiverse place on Earth, home to around 10% of all known species on the planet, crammed into one vast ecosystem. Nowhere else will you encounter pink river dolphins, giant otters, poison dart frogs, and three-toed sloths. It’s one of the few places left where truly wild, undisturbed nature on a grand scale – and exploring by canoe opens up some of its most remote and beautiful corners.

3. Monitor rhinos in South Africa
When looking into safari holidays, you’ll often see the same popular game reserves emerge time and again – and while these can offer incredible experiences, there can be something extra special about heading off-the-beaten track to some of the lesser-known safari parks. Away from crowds of tourists, you’ll find small, peaceful moments with wildlife that feel more intimate and authentic, and may offer the chance to get closer to conservation work happening on the ground.
In South Africa, for example, Qwabi Private Game Reserve offers a five-star safari experience across 11 hectares of untouched African bushveld, with opportunities to spot the iconic Big Five and accompany rangers into the bush to feed and monitor rhinos, helping to record key information for their research database. This intimate experience goes far beyond a standard game drive, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how Africa’s iconic species are protected.

4. Go on a crocodile safari in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is already well known for its abundance of wildlife – from impressive reptiles and colourful frogs to unique beetles and hundreds of vibrant bird species – with trekking through cloud forests being a major highlight. But for an unforgettable and potentially hair-raising cherry on top, why not consider a crocodile safari for guaranteed, up-close sightings of these predators in the wild?
The river Tarcoles is home to one of the largest populations of the great American crocodile, as well as plenty of other interesting mammals, small reptiles, and more than 50 bird species. There’s something completely surreal about gliding through waters commanded by such huge and powerful creatures – American crocodiles can grow up to six metres in length, weigh up to 500kg, and hunt by remaining completely motionless in water until prey is close by! This is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

5. See tigers in India
Tigers are notoriously elusive, often moving through dense jungle without making a sound, and with fewer than 6,000 left in the wild, being able to see one up-close in nature is a true privilege, and often becomes the defining moment of an entire trip. Even in prime tiger reserves, sightings are never guaranteed, which makes locking eyes with one all the more extraordinary.
One of the best places to look for them is on a game drive in Ranthambore National Park, in the Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan. With a thriving population and open, dry forest landscape, sightings are more likely than in denser jungle reserves – all set against the striking backdrop of a 10th-century hilltop fort. There’s an almost cinematic quality to game drives here, rumbling through dusty terrain past crumbling temples and sun-baked lakes, knowing that at any moment a tiger might emerge from the shadows of the ancient ruins.

6. Spot whales, seals, and fluffy penguin chicks in Antarctica
Remote, desolate, and achingly beautiful, Antarctica is often overlooked for a wildlife adventure, yet it truly deserves a place on every animal lover’s bucket list. Animals here have little fear of humans, making sightings even more extraordinary – penguins (including fluffy chicks from mid-December to mid February!) waddle right past you, seals barely lift their heads as you approach, and whales surface just metres from your boat.
The stark, icy landscape only heightens every encounter, stripping away distractions so that nothing competes with the raw presence of the animals against the white and blue expanse. It’s one of the last true wildernesses, where you can watch nature functioning exactly as it has for millennia, untouched by human development. The most practical, safe, and sustainable way to experience it is by cruise – offering onboard comfort and expert guidance alongside daily, intimate wildlife encounters at the very edge of the world.
Tip: If you’d prefer not to spend the entirety of your holiday somewhere cold, but would still love to see Antarctica and its unique wildlife, you could consider Titan’s Antarctica Expedition Cruise with a tour to Rio and Iguazu Falls. Here, you can also experience two of South America’s most vibrant cities, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.

7. Look for rare lemurs in the Madagascar jungle
Did you know that lemurs are the world’s oldest living primates and are found nowhere else on Earth except Madagascar? Many of us know little about them, but it’s difficult not to feel captivated as you learn more! It’s believed that their ancestors landed on the island about 70 million years ago and, as seed dispersers, they’re creators of the forest. Venture into the steamy jungle of Ranomafana National Park to spot greater bamboo and golden bamboo lemurs, in their only confirmed habitat on the planet.
Beyond lemurs, Madagascar is home to over 90% of unique plant and animal species, including half the world’s chameleons, the cat-like fossa, giant hissing cockroaches, and seven species of baobab tree that look like they’ve been planted upside down. The landscape itself also shifts dramatically from lush rainforest to arid spiny desert, and there’s an otherworldly feel here – like you’ve stepped onto an island that evolution forgot, where nature followed its own bizarre and beautiful rules for 88 million years.

8. Encounter snow monkeys in Japan
There’s so much more to Japan than its remarkable architecture and futuristic outlook. It’s also home to some fascinating wildlife and exquisite natural scenes, such as blankets of pretty cherry blossoms covering major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka in springtime, and wild Japanese macaques (snow monkeys) bathing in hot springs in Jigokudani Snow Monkey park, just 3.5 hours from Tokyo.
The macaques in the Monkey Park live completely free range and are the only monkeys in the world that bathe in steaming pools (it’s difficult not to be amused by the look of pure bliss on their faces as they do so!). Visitors can walk along wooden pathways through the forested valley and observe monkeys from just metres away as they soak themselves, groom each other, and play in the snow, which falls here across four months of the year.
Final thoughts…
These underrated wildlife experiences are a reminder of just how extraordinary our planet is. It’s easy for our days to centre around smartphone notifications or rushing from A to B, but taking time to appreciate the world’s natural beauty can provide nourishment for the soul. Wildlife encounters offer one of the best forms of mindfulness, allowing us to create memories that we can savour forever.
Plus, by travelling with Titan Travel, you can learn about the challenges different animals face and what measures are being taken to protect them.
