The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Apprenticeship Scheme

Are you curious about technology and how it can be used to improve people's lives? Do you enjoy solving problems, learning new things and working with others to make a difference?

If so, the Welsh Government's Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Apprenticeship could be the perfect place to start your career.

You'll earn while you learn, gaining recognised qualifications, hands-on experience and the opportunity to work on projects that help improve public services across Wales. From health and education to the environment and tourism, you'll contribute to work that has a real impact on people's everyday lives.

As part of the apprenticeship, youll undertake up to three placements across different DDaT teams, giving you the opportunity to explore a variety of career paths and develop valuable skills in areas such as digital development, user research, data, cyber security, communication and problem solving.

No previous experience is needed! We're looking for people who are enthusiastic, motivated and eager to learn. If you have an interest in technology and a desire to develop new skills, we'll provide the training, support and opportunities you need to build a successful career in Digital, Data and Technology. All you need to bring is curiosity, commitment and a willingness to learn.

What could you be doing?

As a DDaT Apprentice, no two days will be the same. Depending on your placement, you could be:

• Working with colleagues and users to understand problems and identify opportunities for improvement
• Supporting user research activities to help design services that meet people's needs
• Taking part in testing digital services and websites to help make them easier and more accessible to use
• Contributing to digital projects, researching issues and helping to develop solutions
• Working with data to identify trends, support decision-making and improve services
• Collaborating with a range of specialists, including developers, business analysts, user researchers and cyber security professionals
• Creating presentations, reports and other communications to share insights and recommendations
• Supporting day-to-day team activities, including organising meetings, managing information and responding to enquiries
• Learning about new technologies, tools and ways of working through your placements and apprenticeship studies

No previous DDaT experience is required. We're interested in your enthusiasm, potential and willingness to learn. We'll provide the training and support you need to succeed.

What qualification and training will I receive?

As part of the scheme, you'll work towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms while gaining valuable hands-on experience in a range of DDaT roles across Welsh Government.

You'll be supported throughout your apprenticeship by experienced colleagues and a dedicated training provider, who will help you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed.

The apprenticeship typically lasts around 18 months, with:

• 80% of your time spent learning through practical experience in the workplace
• 20% of your time dedicated to structured learning, including classroom sessions, online learning, self-study and assignments

Alongside your apprenticeship qualification, you'll receive additional learning and development opportunities through both the DDaT profession and Welsh Government's wider training programme.

To successfully complete the apprenticeship you will need to have:

• Passed your probation period
• Achieved your Certificate in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms
• Demonstrated the skills and experience required by the DDaT profession apprenticeship framework

By the end of the programme, you'll have gained a recognised qualification, valuable workplace experience and a strong foundation for a career in Digital, Data and Technology.

Am I eligible?

To apply for the DDaT Apprentice Scheme, you will need to:

• Meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements
• Be at least 16 years of age by 1st September 2026. There is no upper age limit
• Not be in full-time education when you start in March 2027

You do not need any previous experience or specific qualifications to apply. We're looking for people who are motivated to learn and have an interest in digital, data and technology.

If you already hold a Level 3 qualification or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms (or a closely related subject), you may not be eligible for this apprenticeship.

As part of the apprenticeship, you will also need to complete the Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) assessment. This online assessment helps evaluate your literacy, numeracy and digital skills and identifies whether any additional support or development may be beneficial when undertaking your apprenticeship.
