Job Description

We are looking to recruit Deputy Registrars predominantly to assist with our very busy ceremony programme in the Derbyshire Registration District. In addition to weekend working, some weekday and Bank Holiday working will also be involved but applicants are never expected to be available every weekday or every weekend, the role is very flexible.

The successful candidates will be based at one of our Registration Offices so please express your preferred location of either, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Buxton, Glossop, Ilkeston or Swadlincote, on your application form. In addition to being of smart appearance to carry out duties and represent the Service at formal occasions and ceremonies, you must be reliable and available to work flexibly to undertake a range of statutory duties as required in the provisions of service, in accordance with the Birth, Death and Marriage Registration Acts.

Initially, the role will be to assist at marriages and civil partnerships at our office Ceremony Rooms and at numerous approved premise venues in Derbyshire with the possibility of future career progression to conducting ceremonies. This is a varied and interesting role which may also lead to you conducting other types of ceremonies (such as naming ceremonies and renewal of vows ceremonies) and possibly, after additional training, you may also be given the opportunity to register births and deaths together with all associated Registration Office administrative tasks.

The position you are applying for is on a Relief basis that currently has no guaranteed hours or fixed working pattern, but the Registration Service is busy all year round especially between March and October when most ceremonies take place.

Disqualifications

An un-discharged bankrupt and/or a person to whom a moratorium period under a Debt Relief Order applies, or who is the subject of a debt relief restrictions order or an interim debt relief restrictions order; A person who is or has been during the 12 months preceding the date on which the appointment is to take effect, a member of the council or of a committee of the council having duties in relation to the appointment of registration officers; An officer or servant, other than the clerk or deputy clerk, of a local authority employed by them in the performance of duties relating to their functions as a burial authority; A person holding office as an authorised person, secretary (for marriages) of a synagogue or registering officer of the Society of Friends; A minister of religion, a medical practitioner, a midwife, an undertaker or other person concerned in a burial or cremation business, a person engaged in any business concerned with life insurance, or a person engaged in any other calling which would conflict with or prevent the proper performance in person of the duties of the office for which he is a candidate; As superintendent registrar, if holding office as a registrar; As registrar, if holding office as a superintendent registrar or is a coroner.

Saturday and Sunday hours will be paid at plain time where it is part of your normal working pattern unless it is between 7pm and 7am, where enhanced rates of pay apply. Enhanced pay rates are paid for Bank Holiday working.
