We are looking to recruit an experienced lawyer to provide legal advice, support and assistance to council officers and members on all contentious and regulatory functions. There will be a particular focus on advising committees and follow up legal work for planning, licensing and appeals and regulatory functions in particular, so a good knowledge of committee procedure and local government law is essential, including planning law, alcohol and taxi licensing and housing law.
You will also be required to undertake other legal work as may be reasonably required which may include the full range of civil and criminal litigation including complex drafting, conducting hearings and appearing as an advocate on behalf of the council.
You will need to:
- be a qualified lawyer (Practicing Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX Fellow Lawyer and qualified to work in the UK)
- be organised, efficient and motivated - able to work under pressure whilst still maintaining a high level of service delivery
- be a team player with a pro-active can-do approach
- have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively at all levels across the council including with elected members, senior leadership team and other stakeholders
The role is 32 hours per week, this can be worked over four or five days to suit the post holder. The council offers hybrid working with high quality office accommodation at Chesterfield Town Hall and the opportunity to work from home. This role will however be required to attend committees and court hearings etc.
