Job summary
We are recruiting motivated, caring and compassionate individuals for the role of Apprentice Wheelchair Therapy Assistant for our Adult Therapies area. This full-time (37.5 hours per week) apprenticeship is undertaken within a fifteen month fixed-term contract, and provides an ideal opportunity to begin your healthcare career at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. You will be required to work Monday to Friday and have regular study days.
Main duties of the job
As an Apprentice Wheelchair Therapy Assistant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, youll learn how to assess for the provision of mobility devices under the supervision of a Wheelchair Therapist, including personal care tasks, unpacking and assembling of devices, mobility and transfer tasks. Over the 15-month programme, youll learn how to take into account a patients individual physical, social and emotional needs to give an holistic assessment and will become a valued part of the therapy team.
Spending most of your time at the base at Seacroft Hospital doing telephone assessments, youll work with the multidisciplinary team and assist with clinics and home visits in the acute and community setting. Its about giving you experience to equip you for whatever comes your way. There will also be coursework and practical assessments so you can demonstrate your learning.

Job responsibilities
2. JOB PURPOSE
To Work within the Wheelchair Therapy team providing clinical, administrative and organisational support to the Wheelchair Therapists.
All clinical responsibilities will be delegated by the Wheelchair Therapist and involve on-going intervention following protocols and guidelines.
The post holder will obtain regular instructions and guidance however, supervision of clinical activities is mainly indirect.
The post holder will be accountable contractually to their employer and to the law for their actions.

Clinical Responsibilities
This post is based at Seacroft Hospital working within the Specialist Rehabilitation Services department and in the community. Alongside Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Engineers.
The post involves both Face to Face and Non Face to Face assessments for and provision of mobility devices under the supervision of a Wheelchair Therapist, including personal care tasks, unpacking and assembling of devices, mobility and transfer tasks.

Qualifications
Basic Educational Standard - - Literate and numerate (to have the ability to obtain a
Pass in Level 1 Functional skills in Literacy and Numeracy

Experience
Awareness of working in a Health or Social Care setting demonstrate an
understanding of Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.

9. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
Support team members with appropriate clinical activities under direct
supervision
To assist the therapy staff in carrying out wheelchair assessments and provision of appropriate medical devices as delegated by a Wheelchair Therapist in the agreed environment taking into account each patients individual physical, social, emotional needs and long term mobility requirement.
To deliver the service using the Wheelchair Service process (screening; assessing and provision of equipment; (reviewing and monitoring outcome measures).
To gain valid informed consent from patients for any Face to Face and non Face to Face assessments
To liaise with patients and carers on a daily basis regarding assessments and provision, answering telephone/email enquiries.
To accompany Wheelchair Therapists or other Wheelchair Service staff on home/community assessments and if appropriate to carry out follow-up sessions unaccompanied.
To assist in the planning and preparation of assessments in the most appropriate environment. Arranging ambulance transport and interpreters where necessary.
