Job summary

Perform unsupervised routine maintenance and minor repair work that does not require the attention of a fully qualified craftsperson, related to his/her training.

Learn minor repair work related to other trades as required.

Use all relevant tools safely and responsibly.

To undertake training for new practices, procedures and equipment.

To assist colleagues on new work and repairs.

To perform other routine tasks including labouring as and when required.

To carry out all duties of engineering Storeman when requested, using computerised stock control system.

Main duties of the job

To undertake all work activities as requested by the Building Supervisor/Estates Officer

To work in accordance with Trust safety rules and procedures at all times

To be prepared to work in hazardous areas taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment.

To actively participate in the operation and control of building planned maintenance schemes.

To actively participate in the operation of facilities labour control scheme, by completion of all paperwork and reports as required by the scheme.

Carry out all work on equipment as required by the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, COSHH Regulations, Building and Construction Regulations and the Trust's Safety Policy.

To carry out building surveys and compile data, as and when instructed by line managers.

To work overtime to carry out repairs/maintenance not possible during normal hours.

To liaise with the Building Supervisor regarding plant or equipment failures, or deviations to regulations, and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.

At all times when on duty or on call, to carry Trust communication devices such as mobile telephones, two-way radios or pagers to facilitate immediate response to emergencies.

To carry out commissioning testing of new equipment and services, routine testing of existing assets and general inspections when required, all in accordance with British Standards, Health Technical Memoranda, manufacturer's instructions and other national Codes of Practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Basic education to GCSE/'O' Level in Maths and English or post-Secondary Education training in a relevant field.
  • City & Guilds of London Institute Certificate in a relevant Building or Construction discipline.
  • Or,
  • An equivalent qualification such as NVQ Level 2 in a relevant Building or Construction discipline.
  • Or,
  • BTEC/ONC in Building or Construction discipline.

Desirable

Experience

Essential

  • Completion of 5 years minimum experience in Building or Construction installation, alteration or maintenance.
  • Reasonably clear and effective in verbal and written communications.
  • Capable working to deadlines.

  • Previous experience of working in an acute Hospital environment or similar demanding role.

Additional Criteria

Essential

  • Available for undertaking overtime.
  • Physically demanding role requiring manual handling of loads, extremes of temperature and the ability to work at heights or in confined spaces.
