The demand for the outstanding care Haven House provides is increasing and more vital than ever. We need you to help us deliver our care to families who so desperately need us during the most difficult of times.

Our Nurses are privileged to spend precious time with babies, children , young people and their families. We need your expertise to provide compassionate care and create special memories.

As a valued member of the Care team, you will join a unique and vibrant team providing symptom management, palliative and end-of-life care, as well as planned and emergency short breaks both at the hospice and in the community. As a Haven House Nurse, you will support the wider team to ensure high standards of holistic care are delivered.

In return, we will support your wellbeing and offer you a learning environment to develop your skills and competencies in paediatric palliative care, supported by our Nurse Practice Educator.

Main duties of the job

This role is based at our beautiful woodland hospice in Woodford Green, offering free parking and easy access from the Central line.

To be able to support families to be together in those last precious days is immensely important to me. Giving children and their families choice and being able to provide a caring and compassionate environment is why I work at Haven House. (Aisling, Haven House nurse)

Job responsibilities

Job title: Staff Nurse Band 5

Pay scale: Agenda for Change

Unsocial hours payment payable dependent on shift pattern

Hours of work: Full time / part time. Flexible working.

Internal rotation between day and night shifts (11.5 hours).

Job summary

To work as part of the Integrated Care Team providing direct care to children and young people who have palliative care needs, in the hospice, home or hospital as directed by the child's care needs and service delivery. The post holder will be required to work a variety of shifts as the hospice provides care services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

1. To provide high quality nursing care for children and young people who have palliative care needs.

2. To promote a person-centred care approach within the multi-disciplinary team.

3. To contribute to the care plans and assessments required to ensure the child/young person receives safe and effective care from hospice services.

4. To liaise with the lead for mental capacity assessments and ensure that these are competed as required.

5. To ensure care is planned and delivered in accordance with the Care Quality Commission Inspectorate standards of quality and safety.

6. To be fully conversant with and contribute to all clinical guidelines, policies and procedures of Haven House.

7. To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to service users, care staff and other members of the team.

8. To further develop clinical skills and knowledge and maintain own competency for NMC portfolio.

9. To work with the Nurse Practice Educator in delivering training and further support junior colleagues with responsibility towards health care support workers.

10. To ensure that safeguarding is embedded in practice and concerns are escalated at the earliest opportunity.

11. To contribute to effective medicines management in accordance with Haven House policies.

12. To develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic evidence-based nursing care.

13. To act as an advocate for the child and family.

14. To ensure that the child/young persons nutritional needs are met whilst at Haven House.

15. To have a knowledge of the commonly used drugs in paediatric palliative care and to undertake the relevant drug administration competencies.

16. To have a knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures.

17. To use Haven Houses Electronic Patient Record System to ensure data is entered in an accurate and timely fashion, in accordance with policy and procedure.

18. To demonstrate a professional approach to work and act in accordance the NMC Code.

Work collaboratively with other team members to: -

1. To constructively identify issues with care strategy, policies and procedure in the interests of the organisation and users of the service.

2. To contribute in the evaluation of services as required ensuring that children, young people and family's views are represented.

3. To be aware of allocated resources and ensure effective time management in own role.

Clinical Governance

1. To participate in audit, service user feedback collection and research as required.

2. To report clinical and non-clinical incidents in accordance with policy.

Educational

1. To identify own learning needs and ensure professional development is maintained and contributes to the appraisal system.

2. To attend all mandatory training as required by the service.

3. To mentor pre-registration nursing students, providing feedback to students assessor.

4. To contribute to overall staff and service development by updating the evidence base for the team re clinical practice.

5. Education and training of parents/carers to meet the health care needs of their child.

6. Education and training of junior staff and students to meet the health care needs of service users.

7. To comply with Haven Houses arrangements for continuing professional development.

Professional

1. To adhere to Haven House policies and NMC Code of standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives.

2. To keep clear and accurate records.

3. To maintain confidentiality at all times in conjunction with Data Protection and Caldicott guidance.

Other duties

1. To promote and live the Haven House values of Compassionate, Professional, Respectful and Safe.

2. To work with colleagues across the hospice as part of the Haven House One Team approach.

3. To conduct yourself in line with the Haven House cultures and behaviours at all times, acting as an ambassador for the hospice.

4. To contribute towards a culture of continuous improvement to help drive our service to Outstanding.

5. To offer flexible support for the work of the organisation, with a flexible approach to new duties and responsibilities as needed to support our vision, mission and values.
