Band 6Speech and Language Therapist37.5 hours a weekExciting opportunity to join the South Staffordshire Community Learning Disability Team.

We are seeking a highly motivated, person centred individual with excellent communication skills to work with us in our well established Community Learning Disability Team.

We aim to provide high quality, community based, integrated services for adults with learning disabilities. As such, we are seeking a specialist Speech and Language Therapist with a passion for working within and improving learning disability services.

You will have experience of completing assessments with people with learning disabilities in a variety of settings and of working with people who have complex mental and/or physical health needs, autism and complex behavioural needs. You will be an experienced practitioner who relishes multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working, who can work creatively to secure good outcomes and embrace new ways of working. Experience and competence in completing dysphagia assessments.You will benefit from the support of a number of highly talented, enthusiastic and friendly Speech and Language Therapy colleagues. The Specialist Learning Disability Directorate (which covers both South Staffordshire and Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin) meet regularly for joint CPD events and facilitate a number of local special interest groups.

Main duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment, diagnosis and treatment programmes to individual adult clients with complex learning disabilities, some of whom have physical disabilities and/or autism. To be an autonomous practitioner, holding a small mixed clinical caseload of those with swallowing and communication needs; working without direct supervision within the context of a multi-disciplinary team.

To support less experienced staff and students and colleagues deliver the Trust contracted services.

To provide expert advice in relation to swallowing and communication. Signposting and providing guidance and information to health and social care professionals, clients, carers and relatives.Please note, we may be required to close this vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applications.

Job responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Be professionally accountable for all aspects of own work, including caseload management and direct clinical care. To work within the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) Standards of Practice and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) standards.

2. Obtain and record informed consent from clients at each contact in accordance with Trust policy.

3. Carry out comprehensive specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessments for complex learning disabilities, some of whom have physical disabilities and/or autism. Interpret clinical information and data related to clinical parameters along with non-clinical information and use clinical reasoning skills to accurately diagnose and develop specific treatment plans.

4. Provide specialist advice to other professionals or assessments to meet clients holistic care needs.

5. Formulate and deliver individual treatment plans based on specialist knowledge, evidence-based practise, national and local guidelines using profession-specific clinical skills and techniques (eg. 1:1 interventions, carer education, patient education).

Essential

  • Assessment and treatment of communication and swallowing needs of clients with learning disabilities.

Desirable

  • Worked as part of multidisciplinary team Worked in the community.
  • Supervised others.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills that are necessary to work with people with learning disability regarding communication and swallowing difficulties.
  • Knowledge around wider health inequalities that affect people with a learning disability.
  • Knowledge of the MCA.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Well-developed clinical reasoning skills Evidence of CPD.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the current policy content and relevant legislation for people with a learning disability and complex behavioural and/or forensic needs; including DSR processes, CTR/CETR & LAEPs.
