Job summary

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT), Airedale NHS Foundation Trust (ANHSFT) and Harrogate General Hospital (HGH) are high-performing Trusts providing acute and specialist outreach services for local people.

BTHFT, ANHSFT and HGH have formed a joint venture, Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP (IPS) to provide pathology services to the three organisations and other local healthcare providers.

Biomedical Support Workers (BSW's) also known as Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA's) are a key staff group within the pathology laboratory. Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well- motivated and innovative, with good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to support individual and team working is essential. All these skills and attributes are in line with the Trust's Right Care Behaviours.

Applications are invited for a full time BSW in the Blood Sciences (Haematology, Blood Transfusion & Biochemistry incl. of Point of care testing )department based at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

The successful candidate will be required to work core hours on a rotation through Haematology, Blood transfusion & Biochemistry and POCT between 08:30 and 20:00 (day shifts & late shifts)

Main duties of the job

  1. Under supervision and following Standard Operating Procedures the following duties may be carried out.

o Undertake in service training leading to the completion of the competency logbook

o Working in line with supervisor to deliver core training to new staff members of all tasks within department.

o Dealing with frequent telephone enquiries e.g. stock requests, bottle advice, giving results and directing calls to correct locations.

o Face to face Pathology enquiries.

o Liaise with and despatch consumables to service users.

o Solve day to day problems e.g. Mislabelled specimens, determining minimal sample volumes, i.e insufficient samples, manual aliquots etc.

o Sort and prepare consistently high volumes of work for daily diagnostic testing.

o Prioritise workload to meet necessary turnaround times, including fast track and emergency work

o Day to Day organisation of workload involving frequent sorting and pre-analytical processes to ensure appropriate testing of samples on all shifts.

o Linking with supervisor to follow business continuity plans during periods of service outages, e.g. staffing, electrical or analyser

o Input PID and other data into the laboratory computer systems in a distracting environment whilst maintaining concentration to ensure patient safety

o Understanding urgency of accurate sample processing to meet duty of care to patients.
