Are you an Occupational Therapist looking for a new opportunity?
Band 5 Occupational Therapist (Preceptor) for CAMHS Acute - Urgent Help Service.
You will be involved in an exciting new development of the enhanced crisis / home treatment 7 day a week service, as an alternative to inpatient admission for Children and Young People experiencing acute mental health difficulties.
You will be part of developing the service to give children and young people living in Sussex a more appropriate and integrated range of services to meet their clinical needs. As a practitioner in the team you will have a varied role of duty, assessment for inpatient admission, discharge and offering interventions to young people and families
The aim of the Sussex CAMHS 'hospital at home' is to provide an alternative to admission to support the local network around the young person (aged 12-18) whilst they are in the acute stage of mental health difficulties. You will be part of an MDT with nursing, psychiatry, occupational therapy, family therapy, social worker, mental health practitioners and support workers.
In the development of this new service you will be supported by our Lead OT and have opportunities for specialist training including in CBT, DBT, and approaches to working with eating needs, and will play an integral role in delivering the evidence based OT pathway to young people/families in Sussex.
Main duties of the job
We are a friendly and supportive multi-disciplinary team, who are dedicated to providing a high quality service which complements the work done by our wider CAMHS colleagues. As part of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's commitment to developing Crisis Care for CAMHS and in line with the NHS Long Term Plan, we are developing our CAMHS Crisis care pathway across Sussex, aimed at further meeting the needs of children and young people presenting with acute mental health needs.
About us
The roles will be Sussex wide and ability to travel across sites is an essential requirement. Some weekend and evening work is essential to enable the service to meet the needs of the children, young people and their families.
Job responsibilities
- To manage a crisis caseload of young people and their families and carers.
- To co-ordinate and deliver individualised care packages / programmes for adolescents and their families and evaluate these programmes, ensuring high standards of practice in accordance with national guidelines and trust policy.
- To develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with young people and their families/carers.
- To work as part of the young persons professional network, keeping them informed of developments, changes in risk status and promoting multi agency collaboration. Liaison with Children's Specialist Services, Educational services, independent sector mental health providers, Social Care and counsellors and any other professional related to the childcare.
- To involve the young person, and as appropriate, their families/carers in delivering programmes of care.
- To be able to assess and manage high-risk adolescent clients in a variety of settings, conducting risk assessments and formulating safety plans
These posts will focus on providing crisis and intensive home treatment, and will be pan Sussex with the need to travel by car essential.
Applicants will need a core professional qualification that is registered with the NMC, Social Work England or HCPC. Applications are welcomed from OTs, Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers, and Drama/Art/Music Therapists.
Experience in working in CAMHS or in crisis services would be beneficial although not essential.

- To plan and deliver straightforward OT interventions and assessments to meet people's health and wellbeing needs
- Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act (2005), to include practical knowledge of FACE documentation, DOLS and Best Interest decisions.
- Child and Adult safe guarding procedures.
- Able to support individuals in their personal occupational needs which can include supporting them in their creative and physical activities within the service or in community settings.
- Demonstrate ability to enhance care through evidence based knowledge.
- Demonstrate professional development relevant to the specific care group.
- experience of running groups
Communication
Essential
- Establish and maintain both verbal and written communication with people on routine and operational matters .
- Able to report to the OT supervisor and wider team in meetings and reviews, on progress with clients personally working with.
