TEACHING/CLINICAL FELLOW CARDIOLOGY

1POST- AT Northwick Park Hospital For UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL STUDENTS GRADE MN37

Suitable for doctors who have completed their foundation training F2. Commencing August 2025 for 1-year fixed term The post is equivalent to a Core Training Level (Fixed Term). This job is ideal for candidates post FY2 who have completed their basic training and want to build upon their clinical experience and undertake some basic research before applying for a speciality training number. This post can also benefit those who are in SpR training and want an out-of-programme year to further develop skills in medical education. Candidates will commit 75% of their time to undergraduate teaching and the remainder in Cardiology (as an SpR) with opportunities for audit and some clinical research. The job plan is a 40-hour week 9am to 5pm. Opportunities for Certificate in Medical Education training and to teach on postgraduate courses and on medical simulation training sessions for Foundation doctors. The post holders will form part of an active and vibrant faculty and will be encouraged to attend and present at meetings and develop on audit projects.

Job responsibilities

Aims & General Responsibilities of the Post

This post is for 12 months. The aim of the posts is to contribute to the medical students Undergraduate Teaching Programme in Cardiology on the Northwick Park Campus and thus gain experience in teaching. It will also provide an opportunity for some further clinical training in Cardiology.

The number of students bases here varies throughout the academic year at times there may be greater teaching commitments and at others (particularly in June & July) it may be considerably less when the TF may devote much more time to their clinical work and audit. Thus, flexibility and initiative are essential.

The Teaching Commitment

The teaching will span year 1 May (2 weeks), year 2 March & December (2 weeks), year 3 October to May and final year students August to December and will involve a range of activities such as tutorials, bedside teaching, ward rounds and teaching clinics on an out-patient basis. A major emphasis of the teaching will be focused on the bedside teaching of clinical skills using the amazing collection of cardiology patients as clinical material. You will also provide a series of problem-based tutorials around common Cardiology problems; At the end of the student placements, you are responsible for assessing their performance and offering them feedback. The post holder will co-ordinate year 6 timetable after liaising with the consultants in cardiology. Post holder will co-ordinate year 3 timetable after liaising with Dr Bethel & Dr Chahal undergraduate lead in cardiology.

You will act as a mentor to a small group of Foundation Year 1 doctors who are delivering teaching to medical students by offering them guidance when required. There are a number of other teaching fellows at Northwick Park with whom you will share experiences and have the opportunity of writing up your findings for medical educational meetings.

You will organise consultant teaching slots and weekly tutorials by liaising with all the consultants in cardiology department.

Clinical Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a central clinical role commensurate to the non-teaching component of the post. This includes you as a supernumerary clinical staff on the ward. You will benefit from a wide range of in-house educational activities, including weekly X-ray meetings, ward rounds, Journal club and Grand Round.

Post Graduate Degree/Education

The successful applicant will be given time and encouraged to study for a higher education degree e.g. certificate in medical education.

The teaching fellows share an office and have access to administrative secretarial help via the campus Undergraduate office.
