Catering Assistant - Part-Time (30 hours a week)
A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join our professional catering team at Gloucestershire Hospitals. Every year, our dedicated staff prepare, cook, and serve over a million meals for patients, staff, and visitors from our production kitchen.
As a Catering Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering fast, efficient, and high-quality food and beverage services. You will support food preparation, maintain hygiene standards, and provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Main duties of the job
- Assist with food preparation, portioning, and presentation of meals
- Liaise with nursing staff to ensure meals meet patient requirements
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation and service areas
- Wash and sanitise cutlery, crockery, utensils, and kitchen equipment
- Provide friendly and efficient customer service to patients, staff, and visitors
- Ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations
- Support stock control and waste disposal procedures
- Report any accidents, hazards, or faulty equipment to supervisors
- Work collaboratively as part of a team to ensure smooth catering services

Job responsibilities
- Prepare and assemble a variety of cold food items, including salads, sandwiches, and desserts, ensuring standard recipes and production methods are maintained.
- Present cold food in an agreed format for patient services and retail outlets, ensuring high standards of portioning and presentation.
- Set up cold food displays in retail outlets in coordination with the Dining Room Supervisor/Manager.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the catering department, following safe systems of work.
- Follow departmental instructions for safe working practices and report any equipment faults or hazards.
- Assist in the setting up and clearing down of the central plating area, ensuring special dietary meals are correctly portioned and presented.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure an efficient and safe catering service.
- Assist with meal delivery and collection of meal trolleys from ward areas.
- Ensure proper waste disposal from your work area, following waste management guidelines.
- Report any workplace accidents or incidents to a supervisor immediately.
- Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to hygiene standards in line with food safety regulations.
- Use catering equipment correctly, reporting any maintenance needs to a supervisor.
- Comply with all Trust policies and procedures, including those related to food safety, health, and safety regulations.
- Attend relevant training courses to support personal and professional development.
- Ensure all stock is rotated properly to maintain quality and reduce waste.
- Accurately complete departmental documentation as required for food hygiene and health and safety records.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Food Safety & Hygiene Certificate (e.g. Level 2 or equivalent).
- Basic literacy and Numeracy Skills (e.g., GCSEs in English and Maths or equivalent).
- Experience or Training in a Catering or Hospitality Environment.
Desirable
- NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in Catering, Hospitality, or Food Service.
- Allergen Awareness Training or Certification.
Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in catering, hospitality or food service role.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience following food safety and hygiene regulations.
Desirable
- Experience working in a healthcare or public sector catering environment.
- Experience using industrial kitchen equipment.
Knowledge
Essential
- Knowledge of Food Safety Regulations.
- Basic Cooking Techniques.
