The Catering and Portering assistant will be responsible for providing assistance across Two key roles for SSL; Porter, and Catering Assistant. The Catering and Portering assistant will receive relevant training to enable them to take up the opportunity of work across these key areas.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for performing general facilities in the catering area. including the service and transport of food to wards & other sites. Responsible for cleaning to the NHS Cleaning Standards, adhering to HACCP, COSHH regulations and Infection Prevention and Control.

Job responsibilities

Catering and Food Service

Responsible for performing general catering duties i.e. service and preparation of food, cleaning of premises and equipment.

Responsible for utilising safely mechanical and electrical equipment including operating wash-up machine/floor cleaning machine following appropriate training.

Have knowledge of allergens within food service and record food waste after meal services.

Responsible in providing food service to patients, staff and visitors.

Portering Service

Responsible for the delivery and collection of pharmacy and controlled drugs from wards.

Responsible for the delivery of all hot and cold food dried ambient food items and hospitality requirements throughout the Unit.

Responsible for the collection and delivery of clean/dirty linen throughout the Unit.

Collection and transportation of rubbish from wards.

Responsible for the unloading/loading of domestic and clinical stores/confidential waste to all wards.

To assist in the removal of furniture and goods for wards and departments.

Responsible for delivery and collection/changing of oxygen/air cylinders to all wards.

Being responsible for the security and up keep of Hospital vehicles and equipment.

Responsible for taking delivery of food items and ensuring safe storage of Bread, Milk and Fresh and Frozen Food deliveries for the Catering Department.

Responsible for delivery of all Stationery Items to all Departments and Wards within the Unit.

Undertake any adhoc duties as required across departments and or sites.

Person Specification

Training

Essential

  • General Education to GCSE level or Equivalent. BICSc Certificate NVQ 1 & 2 Support Services Level 2 Food Hygiene

Others

Essential

  • Ability to Travel/Work between Sites as required.
  • Understanding and empathy towards those with a mental health problem

Knowledge

Essential

  • Has worked in a customer service environment
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Full Driving Licence
  • Basic Food Preparation & Service

Skills and personal Qualities

Essential

  • Understanding of the importance/relevance of good basic hygiene.
  • Able to work flexibly in all areas of the Department.
  • Able to work a flexible shift pattern, which may include unsocial hours, weekends and Bank Holidays.
  • Good Numeracy and Literacy skills.
