Job summary
Applications are welcomed for a motivated and enthusiastic catering nutritionist or dietitian to work within the dietetic departments across Cardiff and Vale UHB. The post holder will work with the strategic lead for catering, to analyse and ensure nutritious meals and therapeutic diets are delivered to hospital patients. This will be in conjunction with nursing staff and the catering deprtament.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be the catering nutritionist or dietitian within the UHB for nutritional issues relating to organisation of the nutritional element of patient catering, the role will involve:
Work with the facilities team on a day-to-day basis to ensure the provision of safe, nutritious food and meals to meet nutritional and therapeutic requirements. To work within a framework of food safety and food hygiene practices.
Supporting the Strategic Lead dietitian and catering service with the nutritional implementation of the Welsh Government new food and fluid standards to be published in 2025 and the continued nutritional monitoring of the Welsh Government (WG) Food and Fluid Standards 2011 for inpatients.
Provide nutrition expertise and identify changes to nutrition specifications in conjunction with the catering service that affect the patient menus. This involves reviewing the range of food products that C&V use and their nutritional content including allergens and coding
Nutritional analysis of recipes and highlighting relevant information or changes on recipes, products and allergens and support menu development.

Qulaifications and Knowledge
Essential
- Degree, or equivalent in Nutrition (AfN) or Nutrition and Dietetics (HCPC)
- Basic Food Hygiene certificate
- Awareness of large-scale catering operations.
- Awareness of the work of the national NHS Wales catering framework, food procurement in the NHS, All Wales nutrition and catering standards for food and fluid for hospital inpatients, nutritional needs of unwell hospitalised adults and children and therapeutic diets.
- Registered with the relevant professional body eg Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) or Association for Nutrition
- Knowledge of nutritional analysis packages
Experience
Essential
- Experience of using nutritional analysis software packages
- Experience of developing menus to meet nutritional requirements
Desirable
- Post degree work experience in NHS
Skills and Attributes
Essential
- Ability to plan and carry out nutritional analysis and including collation of data and writing up reports, ability to explain the principles of healthy eating at an appropriate level for different client groups, ability to develop and deliver nutrition training and programmes using creative approaches.
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Products. Proven ability to prepare documentation utilising Microsoft. Good planning and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
- Proven ability to establish and enhance effective working relationships with stakeholders. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Desirable
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
