Harrogate Convention Centre (HCC), located in the charming Victorian Spa town of Harrogate, is one of the UKs premier event venues. Hosting a variety of events such as conferences, exhibitions, and entertainment, the centre is a world-class and adaptable venue.
Role Overview: As a Cleaning Supervisor, you will be key to ensuring the seamless operation of events at Harrogate Convention Centre.
You will report directly to the Cleaning Services Manager and will oversee a team of cleaning operatives, which includes both in-house staff and contractors. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure a high standard of cleanliness for the venue and events.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and motivate the cleaning team, ensuring all tasks are completed to the highest standard.
- Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to support the operational needs of the venue.
- Produce staff rotas and arrange additional personnel as necessary to meet event or venue requirements.
- Lead a team during shifts, ensuring all cleaning duties are completed and customer satisfaction is maintained.
- Maintain and manage the inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, placing orders as required.
- Ensure cleaning materials and chemicals are stored in compliance with COSHH and other relevant regulations.

Job context
Based at Harrogates Convention Centre the postholder will:
Be under the general direction of the Cleaning Services Manager
The Cleaning Supervisor will often be working opposite shifts to the Manager
Assume delegated responsibility for planning and ensuring the venue housekeeping service meets the specific needs of all Harrogate Convention Centres occupants / users / visitors.
Job Purpose:
The postholder will ensure the Harrogate Convention Centres housekeeping service is delivered through the supervision of both a team of venue colleagues and a number of external contract suppliers.
The postholder will undertake duty management of the venue during out of hours cleaning working and provide assistant duty management during large entertainment events.
Operational management:
Take the lead role in event cleaning specification and supervision leading and managing 8 direct and up to 50 indirect staff per event
Ensure all cleaning equipment is safe to operate and that the team have been trained in its use
Reports any cleaning or maintenance issues to the Cleaning Services Manager or appropriate colleague and monitors progress to ensure issues are resolved
Undertake cleaning and premises officer duties on an ad-hoc basis to meet service demands to cover any service shortfall, or when instructed by line management
Assist the Cleaning Services Manager (CSM) to develop and deliver an effective and efficient building cleaning service
Assists and advises the CSM regarding appropriate staffing levels, work practices, risk assessments and team performance issues
Recommends to CSM types of cleaning materials and equipment
Organises waste disposal to the in venue collection points and oversees the venue waste management function
Resource management:
Monitors and performance manages the cleaning team and external contractors
Allocation of daily work tasks including prioritising, planning and organisation of both venue and external contractors to ensure there is sufficient resource in place to deliver the service specification within agreed budgets.
Monitors, manages and reports to CSM regarding staff attendance, absence and timekeeping
Supervision and management of additional resources (agency / temporary / casual) to meet service needs as and when required.
Responsible for the health and safety of the cleaning team and ensures all relevant codes, including dress codes, are adhered to. Prepares reports for the CSM on any breaches of codes and carries out appropriate training or re-training as necessary.
Communications:
Deals with complaints and resolves issues referring more complex issues to the CSM and Event and Venue Services Manager.
Partnerships:
HCC Clients, suppliers and HCC users

Systems and information:
Maintains an asset register of all maintenance equipment in order to ensure that all statutory requirements for the testing and inspection of equipment are maintained.
Supervises the stock arrangements including the ordering and issuing of materials and equipment and ensuring it is available at the appropriate locations. Provides reports on any problems with equipment or poor-quality supplies to the CSM.
Manages requests and approvals on MyView, processes data onto Wisdom and other employee data systems.
Assists staff where required in the use of systems such as MyView.
Uses Ungerboeck to keep track of events at HCC and collates all Housekeeping data into each sperate event on the system.

Essential
- Undertake weekend / Bank Holiday working.
- Work hours on a rota basis, as required, on an annualised hours contract.
- Be able to arrange suitable cover to overcome issues arising from sickness / events / leave and building maintenance issues.
- Be the senior responsible officer for the Venue during out of hours cleaning activity, liaising with clients, and resolving issues in the absence of Event Manager and direct line management assistance.
- Be flexible in approach and carry out duties as required by the Cleaning Services Manager to ensure effective delivery of safe events across the venue. Be able to respond to the pressures of emergencies or ad hoc works and the redeployment of staff
- Able to work on their feet for long periods of time and lift and carry stock and equipment to locations across the venue
- Flexible attitude to working patterns to deliver activity within the Service needs Setting up / cleaning / securing buildings as and when required
- Must be able to work flexibly and undertake additional hours when necessary
Qualifications
Essential
- IOSH qualified or willingness to achieve
- Operation of COSHH Regulations
- Fire and asbestos safety awareness
- Awareness of budget control and developing efficient methods of working.
- Understanding of the conference and exhibition industry
- Supervision skills to enable delivery of cleaning services
- Good verbal communication skills with the ability to deal effectively with complaints and motivate the team
- Be able to work as part of a team in addition to maintaining supervisory standards
- Numerate and accurate
- Able to deal confidently and professionally with people at all levels

Experience
Essential
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
- Able to use Microsoft Office packages including Office, Excel and Word
- Extensive supervisory experience of a manual workforce

- Developing and maintaining cleaning standards and cleaning methodologies including waste recycling
