Job summary

This is an exciting 12 month fixed term post offering the opportunity to support the education of medical students based by the University of Manchester and other Higher Education Institutes (HEI) at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as well as offering clinical work in either the Surgery and Cancer Division, Medicine and Emergency Care or Women and Children's Division. The successful candidate's preference for clinical work will be discussed with the candidate.

The successful candidate will split their time carrying out duties in the Education Department(50%) and clinical duties (50%).

There will be a requirement to organise weekly formal teaching sessions for the undergraduates.

General support of the educational environment for resident doctors will also be expected, such as carrying out "Developing Clinical Teacher" sign-offs for Foundation doctors and assisting in the running or planning of other postgraduate training sessions, for example the Simulation Programme.

The Trust will support the successful candidate to work towards an educational qualification, such as a Diploma or Certificate in Postgraduate Medical Education, as well as offering bespoke educational feedback and support from the Undergraduate Tutor.

There is an enthusiastic, innovative Medical Education Team to support and direct the successful applicant. Timetables will include four clinical sessions, four educational sessions and two flexible sessions for personal development (PG Cert).*

Main duties of the job

Medical Education Duties

This role will include weekly designated bedside teaching as well as some small group tutorials.How this is to be organised is at the discretion of the Undergraduate Tutor to meet the minimum standards for clinical placements set by the University of Manchester and other HEIs.Clinical Skills and Simulation Teaching - Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a well-equipped clinical skills department and a dedicated Clinical Skills Tutor. There will be an opportunity to assist in teaching clinical skills to the undergraduate students. This will comprise a small part of the educational commitment.

There will be an opportunity to teach and train final-year students, especially the ones placed on the respective departments where the appointee is attached for the clinical part of the job, as well as involvement in their cased based discussion sessions where appropriate.

It would also be expected that the appointee undertakes a formal, distance-learning module-based course in medical education such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education offered by many local universities. The undergraduate department will provide support and fund such a qualification.

Service Provision

The successful candidate will also offer service provision one of the clinical divisions, a preference for the clinical division can be discussed.

Clinical placements will be at the level of an ST1 trainee utilising Foundation competencies.
