Job summary
The successful applicant will be a doctor wishing to develop their skills and knowledge of General Medicine and Gastroenterology.
This post would give excellent and broad experience for a pre-IMT or pre-registrar candidate. It would also be a great opportunity for a candidate interested in GP training to gain additional skills or a special interest. The post will be whole-time (part time or job share will be considered, please contact to discuss).
The successful appointee will join the existing medical team providing Gastroenterology inpatient care. There will also be a requirement to work on the General Internal Medical ward for 1 to 2 weeks of the 4-month rotation and potentially require relief cover for the medical Outlier ward team.
There is no out of hours or weekend commitment.
Clinical: ward-based duties to include routine review of patients, progressing care, prescribing, requesting and evaluating relevant tests, liaising with all medical and allied health professionals. There will also be opportunities to attend clinics and undertake relevant procedures.
Education: there are educational opportunities throughout the working week including weekly radiology meetings and educational meetings, general medical grand round and internal medicine trainee teaching weekly.
Other opportunities include participating in departmental mortality and morbidity meetings, teaching, audits or quality improvement projects with support and supervision.
Main duties of the job
Clinical and Supervision:
The post holder will be expected to carry out ward-based duties, to include routine review of patients, progressing care, prescribing, requesting and evaluating relevant tests, liaising with all medical and allied health professionals. There will also be opportunity to attend specialty outpatient clinics if medical ward staffing allows. The post-holders will have a Consultant Clinical Supervisor and will be encouraged to follow the training curriculum, including participation in appraisal.
Managerial:
The management responsibility of the post holder will be to the Gastroenterology Consultant Clinical Lead Dr Elizabeth Arthurs and Gastroenterology Consultant Dr Ruth Carr who are responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:
The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation, including audit. Clinical audit is established at the BRI.
Research:
Excellent research facilities are available within the Trust. The Trust has a Research and Development Support (RDS) Unit and the Directorates have appointed associate directors and/or co-ordinators for research and development.
The post holder will be entitled to study leave with the authorisation of the Clinical Lead to a maximum of 4 days.

Job responsibilities
Annual Leave
Clinical Fellows are entitled to 27 or 32 days per annum (pro rata) dependent on previous experience, including bank holidays/statutory days. This may be taken in maximum of 10 working day blocks at any one time. For this 4 month rotation Annual Leave entitlement is 9 to 10 days.

Essential
- Able to assess, initially resuscitate and stabilise acutely sick patients
- Demonstrates good clinical judgement

- Training /experience in Respiratory Failure and management of patients on NIV/CPAP
- Designed and / or completed audits

Qualifications & Education

- Registered with General Medical Council (UK)
- At least 18 months full-time hospital service as an trainee in the Foundation (or higher) grade. No unexplained career gaps
- Evidence of interest in Oncology/Haematology and/or Internal Medicine
- Advanced Life Support provider
Desirable
- Previous experience of working in in the British Healthcare system (not observing)
- MRCAM A/ MRCP/MRCS (Part 1) or equivalent
- Other membership, fellowship or diplomas
