Job summary

We are looking for a self-motivated pharmacy technician to jointhe Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) and South Network at Pennine Care, working within the multidisciplinary and pharmacy teams in Stockport and Tameside.

The individual must be a good communicator, accurate, enthusiastic, flexible, able to use their own initiative, organise their own workload and work as part of a busy team.

All applicants must have a recognised Pharmacy technician qualification, NVQ level 3, BTEC, City & Guilds or equivalent experience, must be an accredited accuracy checker and registered with the GPhC.

The pharmacy team is a purely clinical team based at sites across the whole of the Pennine Care footprint. The team includes pharmacists and technicians embedded in all services,includes a medicines information service, research and innovation and electronic prescribing.

As a member of the team, you will be provided with regular supervision and CPD /learning opportunities and will in turn support the development of the pharmacy service.

The team meets on a regular basis to support one another and progress the service.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the development of a range of medicines management activities at ward level including medication history taking and medicines reconciliation to inpatient units: the Psychiatric Intensive Care (PICU) wards; Woodbank (Stockport) and Walkerwood (Tameside) and support the rehab and high support wards in the South Network.

Job responsibilities

To coordinate the supply of medication to ensure good medicines management practices.

To act as a key member of the multidisciplinary ward team and the wider pharmacy teamproviding medicines management advice to healthcare professionals and counselling to patients and carers.

To participate in local and national audits and provide information as required, throughout the year.

To support staff with medicines related queries and counsel patients on medication

To support staff around medication error incidents and ways to improve accuratemedicine administration

To use your skills as an Accuracy Checking Technician

To carry out three monthly Controlled Drug (CD) checks

To contribute to the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

To support the in-house investigation and resolution of medicines management related incidents

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of dispensary and patient services
  • Good presentation skills (verbal and written)
  • Good technical pharmaceutical knowledge
  • Good clinical pharmaceutical knowledge

Desirable

  • Good IT skills (including word processing and spreadsheets)

Education & Qualification

Essential

  • BTEC Certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences/ NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent)
  • Registered with the GPhC / proof of application in process
  • Accuracy checking accreditation

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience as qualified technician in hospital pharmacy
  • Substantial experience of dispensary and ward based services
  • Experience of implementing change and new developments
  • Experience of developing guidelines / protocols / SOP
  • Experience of training healthcare professionals/ unqualified staff
  • Experience of audit
