37.5 Hours per week

We are looking for a clinical support worker with suitable surgical experience or willing to learn the role of a clinical support worker. The successful applicant will work within our busy surgical admission unit and Postoperative day unit department at Friarage Hospital.

Post holders will be appointed at band 2 or band 3 depending upon qualifications.

Band 2 requirements - willingness to undertake all relevant training and qualifications if wishing to develop into a band 3 role.

Band 3 requirements - Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or GCSE equivalent (A-C/ 4-9)

Care certificate

Level 3 vocational qualification

or

Short courses and completion of

competency workbook equivalent

to Level 3 in a range of patient and

clinical care duties

and/or

Equivalent knowledge and

experience in a range of clinical

care duties equivalent to Level 3;

- Theoretical knowledge

- Experience of a range of

care and related procedures

- clinical observations

- knowledge of relevant

legislation

There is a clear framework to allow for postholders to develop from a band 2 to band 3 and this includes completion of the qualifications.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be working within the SAU/POSDU assisting and caring for patients undergoing surgery.

The role of a clinical support worker higher level within the department is a specialised and extremely interesting and rewarding role. As a support worker you will be directly impacting on the quality of care we provide to patients undergoing a surgical procedure.

You will be part of a larger multi-disciplinary team preparing and educating patients for surgery. You will be trained in nurse led discharge and will work closely with the nursing team.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication & active listening skills. Ability to adopt appropriate styles & methods of communication.
  • Timekeeping, planning & prioritisation skills.
  • Basic IT skills to use electronic patient records & other Trust systems.
  • Analytical and judgement skills to make decisions based on patient / service user interactions and observations and metrics.
  • Working knowledge of legislation underpinning care provision.
  • Understanding of the importance of robust, accurate, clear, timely documentation.
  • Awareness of GDPR and the need for confidentiality
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in health or social care
  • Experience of undertaking and recording clinical observations and escalation of changes or findings.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in an NHS care role.

Qualifications Band 2

Essential

  • Must complete the care certificate within the 6 months probationary period and 'on the job training'; instruction will be provided - this is an NHS entry level requirement.

Qualifications Band 3

Essential

  • Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or Maths & English GCSE A-C/4-9 or Maths & English O Level/GCE A-C or Maths & English CSE Grade 1 or NARIC/ENIC which compares the qualification to UK GCSE (https://www.enic-naric.net/)
  • Care certificate
