Job summary
We are looking for enthusiastic colleagues looking to join our team of acute medical consultants at Heartlands Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham.
Our department includes a large acute medical unit, a newly refurbished busy SDEC and 3 short stay wards as well as in-reach to the emergency department.
We serve a diverse population within an urban conurbation. The trust is committed to tackling health inequalities and providing outstanding care to our communities.
The medical take is busy with a fascinating range of pathologies and rich in learning and teaching opportunities. We welcome applications from consultants with other speciality or research interests and several of our substantive consultants work across other departments such as infectious diseases, endocrinology and renal medicine. Part-time working can be considered.
Main duties of the job
Our Acute medical consultants are responsible for:
*Oversight of the medical take in ED, MAU and SDEC; including post-take ward rounds
*The care of patients admitted to acute medicine wards and will complete daily ward rounds.
*Providing support, education and supervision for doctors in training and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
*Contributing to departmental governance processes including M & M and incident reporting and reviews, as well as service development
*Administration related to patient care- prompt review and communication of patient results, with support of our admin team
*Maintaining good working relationships with the whole MDT

Job responsibilities
KEY SKILLS
CLINICAL CARE
* To have oversight of all team activity during that clinical session, and provide support to other registered and non-registered clinical practitioners when needed.
* Demonstrate excellence in patient care
* To provide appropriate supervision to doctors in training and other clinical practioners
* Administrative duties related to patient care
* Contribution to undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing medical education activity, including AHPs as part of the multidisciplinary team.
* Regular participation in departmental and directorate meetings.
* Consultants are encouraged and supported with research projects.
* To help the department and Trust in emergencies.
* Appropriate evening and weekend on-call commitments.
* Contribution to Governance and Morbidity & Mortality process for Acute Medicine
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Shared ward rounds of the acute medicine footprint.
* Assessment of new patients within the Emergency Department, MAU & SDEC unit, including posttake ward rounds.
* Full participation In the Acute Medical rota which consists of (but not limited to): 08:00-16:00, 10:00-16:00 and 15:00-22:00 shifts. Weekend cover is included on a 1:6 basis; this will be pro-rata if less than full time.
* TOIL is usually given for weekend working.

Qualifications
Essential
- * MBBS or equivalent
- * MRCP or equivalent
- * Entry on the GMC specialist register for General Internal Medicine or Acute Medicine
