An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Consultant Psychiatrist in this new post dedicated to Perinatal Psychiatry in North Cumbria following a consultant retirement. The previous role had been in both Perinatal and Community Psychiatry.
The successful candidate will join the dynamic multidisciplinary team, established 6 years ago and they will provide senior medical input to the team, holding two weekly outpatient clinics at various sites in North Cumbria. They will support the team and be available for liaison and case discussions.
This post is for 5 PA, however we would be happy to support candidates to increase the number of PA's worked if desired as there are opportunities within the Community Treatment Team.
Online consultation is embedded due to the demographics of Cumbria, and this supports timely clinical input.
The Team provides assessment, intervention and care co-ordination for women suffering with or at risk of experiencing moderate to severe mental illness either during pregnancy or up to one year postpartum. The Team works closely with colleagues in universal services, Maternal Mental Health, Obstetrics, Health Psychology, IAPT and Social Care. The Team will have its first peer review by the Royal College of Psychiatrists Centre for Quality and Innovation (CCQI) in February 2025.
Main duties of the job
You will work with the multidisciplinary team, hold weekly outpatient clinics assessing direct referrals from G.P.'s, Psychiatrists and Obstetricians, or from the CPN's in the Perinatal Team. They will use new ways of working and participate in the review of patients within the Perinatal Community Mental Health Team. Some patients will be reviewed at home and others referred by the team may be reviewed in the outpatient clinics.
You will provide or ensure referral to the appropriate service for the provision of up-to-date evidence-based interventions. Additionally, they will assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act (Section 12(2) approved) and act as a Responsible Clinician for detained patients and they will provide cross-cover for other perinatal consultants within the trust.
You will have your own office space and will be supported by a medical assistant and/or medical secretary. This is a part time post however we would be happy to support candidates to carry out additional sessions with the community team.

Job responsibilities
This part time Consultant Psychiatrist post will be dedicated to Perinatal Psychiatry in North Cumbria. This post is for 5 PA, however we would be happy to support candidates to increase the number of PAs worked if desired as there are opportunities within the Community Treatment Team.
The post holder will provide senior medical input and typically see one new patient and 2 follow-ups per outpatient clinic. They will liaise closely with the multi-disciplinary team and be available for case discussions on a daily basis. The team uses online consultations due to the geography of the area to facilitate timely assessments and reviews. The post holder will have time in their clinics to be able to respond to urgent cases should this be required.
There are 5 programmed activities (1.5 SPA including CPD). We would be happy to support candidates to increase the number of PAs worked if desired as there are opportunities within the Community Treatment Team.
Applicants should be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the point of interview. Candidates should be suitably qualified, including eligibility for Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status.

Qualifications & Training
Essential
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Registered as a Specialist in Psychiatry on GMC Specialist Register (or are eligible for such inclusion) or within six months of gaining CCT
- Approved under the section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act or equivalent, or willing and eligible to apply for approval
- Approved Clinician status
Desirable
- Another post-graduate qualification (other than MRCPsych)
- Specialist training in Perinatal Mental Health
Knowledge
Essential
- Up-to-date knowledge in the field of Perinatal Psychiatry
- Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy and legislation
Desirable
- Specialist interest in an area relevant to Perinatal Psychiatry
- Completion of training related to Perinatal Mental Health
- Specialist interest as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies
