Job summary
Required to fill this new substantive position within the Thoracic Surgery Department based at the St Jamess University Hospital and serving the population of Leeds and the West and North of Yorkshire.
The successful candidate will join a team of seven other consultant colleagues. The Department offers a wide range of clinical activity including the management of lung cancer, benign disease of the chest, diagnostic and therapeutic endobronchial procedures, and the holistic management of chest trauma. Currently, there is an on-call rota with a consultant of the week which is shared between all consultant colleagues and averages to around 1:7.5. There is a focus on working as a team with both surgical and multidisciplinary colleagues. The successful candidate would also be expected to attend and contribute to shared decision making at forums such as the High-Risk MDT, Lung Cancer MDT, departmental governance, and scheduling meetings.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant should possess FRCS Cardiothoracic (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in all aspects of thoracic surgery currently offered by the department including robotic thoracic surgery, elective and emergency management of the airways including airways stenting, use of laser and diagnostic endobronchial navigation and surgical management of chest trauma and mechanical rib fixation. Prospective candidates should be able to demonstrate an ability and a track record of working with multi-disciplinary colleagues and lead on innovative service development. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

In relation to this post:
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver care to patients with thoracic disease through the provision of
Out-patient clinics
Supervision of patients
Care of in-patients on an on call rota (1 in 6)
Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings
Theatre cover as required
2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds and across the WYATT area.
2.3 To work with colleagues in the thoracic to deliver acute on call, currently 1 in 6. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.
2.4 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the thoracic team. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

Qualifications
Essential
- FRCS or equivalent qualification.
- Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.

Experience
Essential
- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Thoracic Surgery.
- Specifically, must demonstrate higher surgical training in Thoracic Surgery.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Desirable
- Should be able to independently perform a full range of acute and elective endobronchial procedures including stents, laser, endobronchial valves and navigational bronchoscopy.
- Should be able to demonstrate competence or participation in a robotic thoracic surgery programme.
- Should be competent in all aspects of thoracic trauma including multidisciplinary team management and rib fixation
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential
- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Thoracic Surgery.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
