Job summary
The department of Thoracic Surgery at Wythenshawe Hospital is recruiting a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, to work alongside our specialised and experienced Thoracic Surgical, Respiratory and Oncology team in the Lung Cancer Directorate.
The post is a whole-time equivalent position at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and based at the Wythenshawe Hospital Site. Applicants should have substantial experience in general thoracic surgery, including trauma/ minimally invasive techniques and managing patients with thoracic malignancies and pleural disease.
The post is immediately vacant to join 9 substantive appointments within the multi-specialty Directorate of Lung Cancer & Thoracic Surgery. There is a major focus on early detection, accelerating access to thoracic surgery, thoracic trauma and delivering expansion of the GM Lung Cancer Screening Programme.
The Department of Thoracic Surgery is one of the largest in the UK with access to a high volume complex practice supported by a nationally leading multidisciplinary team. Extensive opportunities exist for service development, education and research and applicants should expect to have substantial experience and track record for delivery. Applicants should also possess a clear philosophy on their potential contribution to augment and advance the current departmental standards and activity.
Main duties of the job
The team operates a 'Consultant of the Week' model, with responsibility for the daily triage of referrals, listing schedule review and daily Board & Ward Rounds.
All Consultants will have access to outpatient clinics, a broad MDT portfolio (including lung cancer, mesothelioma, airway management, sarcoma, emphysema) and 2 full operating days per week (3 sessions fixed/ 1 flexible).
Participation in the thoracic surgery on-call rota, ward cover, and management of admissions from A&E, general wards, the major trauma centre and inter-hospital transfers is expected.
The post holders will be actively involved in the organisation, preparation and delivery of the MDTs and have collective responsibility for delivery of accelerated pathways.
As part of this post along with other colleagues, the post holder will provide support and guidance to the team consisting of specialist registrars, senior clinical fellows, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, OT Dietician, lung physiologists and other junior medical staff
The appointee will take an active role in medical education and will be expected to take on the role of educational/ clinical supervisor for trainees.
The post holder will be encouraged to participate in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, and to participate in departmental audit, research, governance and service development.

Essential
- FRCS/MRCS FRCS (C/Th) or equivalent
- On Specialist Registrar for CT surgery or CCST within 6 months of interview
- Wide clinical experience in Adult thoracic Surgery including minimally invasive surgery and VATS lobectomy
- Experience and interest in Teaching
- Relevant experience in organisation and undertaking of Audit
- Research and evidence base to practice
- Appreciation and understanding of the role of management
- Ability to integrate within, motivate and provide professional lead in multidisciplinary team
