Job summary

We are seeking a qualified coxswain to join the established Southern Western Ambulance Service team on the Isles of Scilly. The successful applicant will work alongside front line emergency crews responding to incidents that require sea transport.

The successful applicant will be available during the hours of their shift, day and night, to immediately respond when requested, to ready the Sea Ambulance. They will be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of all that board the vessel, and the safe travel between destinations. Outside of the main duty of responding to emergencies, the successful applicant will also be responsible for the safe transport of patients and employees when requested for various other duties, such as patient transport, travel to off islands for community responder liaison, maintenance, cleaning, etc.

The duties of the role go beyond skippering the sea ambulance, it is expected that the successful applicant be reliable, proactive, and engaging with their team and their community. Building on already established relationships, working alongside your community in responding and caring for people in need.

Due to the nature of the role, you must be permanently resident on St Marys, Isles of Scilly, to be eligible to apply for the position.

Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

  • Either RYA/DFT Certificate of Competency Service - Coastal Skipper or RYA/DFT Advanced Power Boat with commercial endorsement, Certificate plus 2 years' experience with high speed commercial vessels of this size.
  • Driving licence contains C1 category (driving vehicle over 3500kg). or working towards
  • All elements of the STCW determined by the MCA
  • Medically Certified (ENG1)
  • Minimum of 12 months recent driving experience.
  • IOS Boatsmen Licence to the appropriate level required for the operation of the vessel

Desirable

  • Institute of Healthcare and Development (IHCD) Ambulance Care Assistant Certificate and/or HSE First Aid at Work Certificate

Previous experience

Essential

  • Recent experience of the type and size of craft (Twin jet drive engines) high speed, responding to a variety of situations in differing weather conditions plus night and day operation within the Islands

Desirable

  • Recent experience of the type of operation in which the craft is engaged
  • Dealing with patients and people
