The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for a Decontamination Specialist Estates Officer to join a high-performing team within our Estates department. This role offers the chance to work with cutting-edge technology and contribute directly to patient safety.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Essential: Recognised Engineering Apprenticeship HNDC or OND/C+, extensive experience as a Certified Decontamination Test Person in:HTM-01-01, HTM2031
  • Desirable: Certified in HTM2025

Working Pattern and Remuneration:

  • Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
  • On-Call: Participation in an on-call rota, approximately 1 in 3 weeks, covering 7 days per week. A competitive on-call allowance is provided.

Main duties of the job

As a Decontamination Specialist Estates Officer, you will be responsible for providing a comprehensive maintenance, testing, and validation service for all medical decontamination equipment within the Trust. This includes sterilisers, disinfectors, steam clean systems, plant equipment, and other specialist equipment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing preventative maintenance and break down repairs on all complex engineering services associated with decontamination equipment and respective specialist accommodation in compliance with HTM2010, HTM2030 and HTM2031
  • Conducting validation and testing to ensure compliance with relevant standards
  • Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and identifying solutions.
  • Maintaining accurate records of all maintenance and testing activities.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for Trust Officers in Estates and other disciplines, providing expert advice on decontamination equipment to support informed decision-making regarding maintenance and compliance.

Job responsibilities

Acts as the Trust Test Person Sterilisers/Washer Disinfectant/Clean Steam in accordance with HTM 01-01 and HTM 2031 respectively, across all Trust properties.

Be required to participate fully in a system of planned maintenance of equipment including responsibility for and involvement in the preparation of maintenance procedures and planning of maintenance schedules.

Be responsible for ensuring adequate records are maintained in compliance with HTMs, ISO9001:2000 procedures, relevant guidance documentation and local Trust procedures. The post holder will ensure the records are filed in the appropriate location within one week of their completion.

In conjunction with the appropriate user/managers, authorise the return to service of decontamination equipment after maintenance/validation.

Be responsible for obtaining the appropriate signature (Test Person/User) when handling decontamination equipment back into service.

Be responsible for undertaking quarterly audits of test results for carrying out an investigation into any anomalies and on completion for providing a written report to the Estates Management Team.

Be required to ensure continuity of service by ensuring cover throughout holiday periods in accordance with departmental guidance.

Be responsible for undertaking development work and providing technical support to other departments.

Be responsible for commissioning new equipment, including the completion of all relevant documentation.

Be responsible for monitoring the performance of external contractors, agencies to ensure that compliance standards are maintained and provide formal reports when required.

Be responsible for acquainting themselves with general technological developments on matters related to the relevant fields of activity.

Be required to maintain familiarity with all MDA Safety and Hazard Notices and MDA Device Bulletins.

Be responsible for familiarising themselves with the correct functioning and principles of the operation of all equipment for which the department is responsible.

Be required to carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade in the field of their expertise.

Be required to order, via the appropriate procedure, suitable replacement non-stock items in accordance with the Trust Standing Financial Instructions.

Be able to diagnose and repair faults on general engineering installations, plant and equipment.

Possess the ability to work on their own with the minimum of supervision, ensuring a quality value for money service is provided to the Trust.

Demonstrate high levels of self-motivation, determination and flexibility both in skills and attitude.

Possess the ability to communicate effectively with the Estates Management Team, other Trust persons, Steriliser Team members, other Estates staff and customers utilising written and/or verbal communication skills. Particular regard must be given to communication of breakdowns and missed/late ppms to the Estates Management Team.

Ensure that all works carried out comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act and all current legislation and/or guidance. The Trusts Risk Assessment pack must be utilised to ensure safe and working practises are followed at all times. All safety equipment/PPE equipment is available and must be used where required. Permit to work systems must be used in all instances where departmental guidance indicates.

Ensure that relevant check lists/advice notes/Q documents are amended/updated/created to comply with the requirements of ISO9001:2000, HTMs, Manufacturers Literature and other relevant guidance documentation.

Undertake surveys and provide comprehensive reports appropriate to the duties of this job description.

Ensure the ISO9001:2000 framework is implemented and operated at operational level in a manner that reflects the departments Quality Manual and any locally agreed procedures.

Contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate Disinfection/Decontamination procedures and Safe Systems of Work in line with Health & Safety/Sterile Services Guidance.

Undertake data logger validation tests and produce appropriate graphs/test results using relevant computer software packages.

The post holder is responsible for undertaking planned maintenance/testing and validation of all decontamination equipment up to and including yearly testing.

Direct and work with specialist consultants in matters relating to decontamination equipment, associated plant and specialist accommodation.

Undertake risk assessments of all decontamination equipment, associated plant and specialist accommodation.

Carry a means of communication to be contactable at all times.
