Job summary

General Practice Assistant is an important role within primary care to help support and carry out the smooth and efficient running of the surgery. You will be involved in completing administrative tasks, combined in some areas with clinical duties as well as being the first point of call from triaging and signposting patients.

Your main responsibility is to assist the clinical team in booking appointments, triaging and carrying out clinical observations/duties within your scope. The GPA will need to follow the triaging policy when triaging online requests and dealing with all general queries from staff and patients. You will perform administrative duties, such a triage, EMIS tasks, Docman tasks and other relevant tasks instructed by the team lead.

Job Summary

We are looking to recruit a GPA based at our Headcorn surgery. Hours are negiotable and salary is to be discussed at interview.

They will be involved in completing administrative tasks, combined in some areas with clinical duties as well as being the first point of call from triaging and signposting patients.

The Clinical GP Assistants main responsibility is to assist the clinical team in booking appointments, triaging and carrying out clinical observations/ duties within their scope. The GP assistant will need to follow the triaging policy when triaging online requests and dealing with all general queries from staff and patients.

They will perform administrative duties, such as Triage, Emis tasks, Docman tasks and other relevant tasks instructed by the team lead. They will also perform clinical duties; such as Phlebotomy, ECG and Part 1 Diabetic Reviews. They will always work within their clinical scope that they have had appropriate training for, as well as being signed off being a clinical assessor.

You will be allocated administrative tasks by the GP Assistant Lead.

CLINICAL ASPECT

It is important for the GP Assistant to stay up to date and proactive with their clinical knowledge and skills. Upon completion of their care certificate and additional clinical courses for this role they must complete an allocated amount of clinical hours each week; coordinated by the team lead.

General Practice Assistants will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy to include:

Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks.

Managing effective use of training to update knowledge and skills.

Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards

General Practice Assistants will strive to maintain quality within the practice, and will:

Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk.

Ensure you are following Smart Booking, meaning appointments are booked with appropriate health care professional.

Ensuring you follow the Triage protocol.

Escalating to the GP Assistant Lead if you are unable to book within two weeks.

Assess own performance and take accountability for own actions, either directly or under supervision.

Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance.

Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients needs.

Effectively manage own time, workload, and resources.

Personal Training

General Practice Assistants will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment, such training to include:

Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development.

Participation in PLTs and other training relating to the role.

Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Ideally any healthcare qualifications advantageous as well as Phlebotomy/ECG qualification, otherwise training will be given.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a GP practice or Healthcare setting advantageous.
  • Proven Administration experience.
  • Capable of using different IT systems.
  • Must be able to communication at all levels between staff and patients using a calm and polite manner, face to face and by telephone.
  • Must be able to keep calm under pressure.
