Job summary

The Healthcare support worker position undertakes tasks and duties within a defined role. The post holder will work under indirect supervision of the practice nursing team. They will work collaboratively with the practice team to meet the needs of the patients, following policy, protocols and procedures set out by the practice and national guidance. The post will also include some administrative duties. The role is also to provide support to the clinicians (both doctors and nurses) and Clinical Services Manager to meet the requirements of the practice.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Healthcare Support Worker to join our team. In this role, you will provide vital support in structured clinics and patient appointments. Your responsibilities will include taking blood samples, measuring blood pressure, conducting ECGs, and assisting with health reviews, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care. We provide services to around 50,000 registered patients, thats a quarter of the population of Bury, and our patients can access services across all four of our sites.

Job responsibilities

New patient registration checks

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and wellbeing e.g. NHS Health checks, mental health and high risk reviews as per guidelines

BP monitoring

Urinalysis

Diabetic foot check

Phlebotomy

Chaperoning duties

Weight monitoring

Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection

Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly, reporting any problems to the nurse manager

Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection

Restocking/maintenance of equipment

Cleansing of surgical equipment

Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording

Carrying out ECG tests and sending test off to Broomwell for results to be reported

Fitting 24 hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitors and uploading the results to the patient record

Fitting of ECG Holter monitors and uploading the results to the patient record

Preparing and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions, including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations

Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms

Restocking of clinical areas and consulting rooms

Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual e.g smoking cessation, ear syringing

Helping to raise awareness of health and wellbeing and how it can be promoted

Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and wellbeing

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Team working
  • Experience of working under indirect supervision
  • Minimum of 1 year recent previous experience of working within a HCSW role or equivalent clinical role
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office software

Desirable

  • Working within the NHS
  • Experience of using EMIS clinical system (including TQuest)
  • Experience of working within GP Practice

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE level standard minimum of 5 passes at Grade A-C (including English)
  • QCF/NVQ Level 2 or above
  • Phlebotomy / Venepuncture
  • Clinical skills competency relevant to role

Desirable

  • National Care Certificate of HCSW
  • Up to date life support training
  • Up to date safeguarding training
  • ECDL
