Job summary

Are you a Pharmacy Assistant looking to further your career in a specialist area? Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) is a fast-paced specialism, with new therapies regularly coming into use.

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to join our small and dynamic Pharmacy team. You will be part of a wider multi-disciplinary team providing quality care for a range of oncology and haematology patients. You will also work alongside the Nutrition Team to provide our ward-based parenteral nutrition (PN) service for neonates and adults. You must possess a full NVQ level II in Pharmacy Services or equivalent dispensing qualification.

Teamwork is essential to this role so you will be happy working at close quarters with colleagues in an environment that can be pressured and sometimes stressful. A desire to go the extra mile for patients is central to the ethos of our team, so you will have a caring approach and excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as being motivated to look for service improvements.

Main duties of the job

Main tasks will include:

  • Dispensing of intravenous and oral chemotherapy doses and supportive medications
  • Stock control, including regular stock checks and ordering of stock through stores.
  • Interacting with other staff and patients both in person and over the telephone, and the need to work quickly and accurately under pressure.
  • Liaising with the nutrition team and external suppliers to organise the provision of parenteral nutrition for patients.
  • Completion of documentation and other administrative tasks within the SACT and PN Services unit.

Full training will be provided in-house and your ongoing learning and development in this role is supported and encouraged.

Education & Qualification

Essential

  • NVQ level 2 dispensary course (including dispensary modules) or equivalent dispensing course e.g. Buttercups / NPA
  • GCSE Maths, English and Science

Experience

Essential

  • Experience in working with the public and or patients
  • Previous experience of working in community or hospital pharmacy environment
  • Dispensing of medicines
  • Dispensing controlled drugs
  • Experience of handing out of medication to patients / basic level counselling skills
  • Experience of over the counter sales of medication
  • Experience of supervising staff

Knowledge

Essential

  • Computer literate (Microsoft Word, outlook, excel and PowerPoint)
  • Understanding of Pharmacy stock control computer system

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Ascribe / JAC pharmacy system
