Job summary

We have an excellent opportunity for a Kitchen Porter at Northampton General Hospital.

This role is part of our Patient Catering team in providing meals to Patients.

Working shift Pattern 07:00-15:00

Main duties of the job

Working as a Kitchen Porter your role will be essential for the delivery of patient food services at Northampton General Hospital. You will be working alongside our team of chefs in our Central Production Kitchen, within this role you will be responsible for the transportation of food between our patient catering kitchens, you will also be date labelling food and stock rotation. You will also be expected to complete other tasks in the kitchen environment.

You will need to be responsible, punctual, and flexible, have excellent communication skills.

Job responsibilities

Your main duties as will be but not limited to.

- To demonstrate an awareness of the Food Safety and be able to work to the highest standards in both quality and hygiene. Following Food Safety and Health and Safety compliance. Ensuring all Codes of Practice for Health, Hygiene, Safety, COSHH and HACCP are adhered to.

- To have a thorough knowledge of the Food Safety Procedures, cleaning techniques and standards within the kitchens. Carry out cleaning duties, maintaining hygiene levels to ensure that all food production areas, ancillary rooms fridges, and general catering equipment are kept in a clean and hygienic state, Cleaning of Floors/surfaces and machinery following directions identified in the departments cleaning schedules.

- To undertake on the job training, ensuring your mandatory and job specific training is complete and up to date. Follow Trust wide, Directorate and Departmental procedures.

- Wear protective clothing in line with policy and use approved safe methods when lifting and handling.

- Prioritise your own workload with minimal supervision, arranging workload to achieve daily/weekly goals.

- To transport food safely from the Central Production Kitchen to the Barratt Kitchen and collect and return the empty trollies. Operation of the electric transportation vehicles in line with the Trusts policies.

- Ensure correct storage, labelling and rotation of all chilled/dry/frozen produce.

- Report any work difficulties and potential hazards such as equipment defects promptly to the responsible line manager.

- Provide support to department areas when the need occurs.

Lead by example, conducting yourself in a respectful and professional manner. To maintain a pleasant customer focused manner always.

Any other reasonable request related to tasks identified by the Senior Management Team.

Person Specification

Education, Training and Qulifications

Essential

  • No formal education is required as on the job instruction, training and theoretical knowledge is provided. Therefore the ability to retain information and learning is essential together with excellent communication skills (oral and written)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of working in a food production environment
  • Previous experience of using industrial Dishwashers
  • Knowledge of good health & safety practices
  • Knowledge of food safety protocols

Desirable

  • Knowledge of special dietary requirements
  • Experience of working in a customer facing industry

Skills

Essential

  • Previous experience in Catering environment
  • Strong communication skills
