This is a new Band 4 assistant post demonstrating our continued commitment to developing the assistant role within pharmacy.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated pharmacy assistant to join our Stores and Stock Distribution Team at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, as part of the management team.

This will be a key role in the Stores and Stock Distribution services pharmacy team, managing the service and staff as deputy to the Stores and Stock Distribution Manager, and Dispensary Manager.

You will be a strong confident team player, demonstrate professionalism at all times, act as a role model to all our assistants, with a strong commitment to staff training, and take responsibility for ensuring the prompt, effective receipt and distribution of medicines between all three Acute Hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

Under the direction of the Stores and Stock Distribution Manager and Dispensary Manager, you will manage the Lead Pharmacy Assistants in both the Stores and Stock distribution sections of the department, and a team of assistants.

Good communication skills will be required to ensure we are maintaining a high level of service across the trust.

This is a full time role based within the pharmacy.

Job responsibilities

Supporting the Stores and Stock Distribution Manager in the delivery, streamlining and development of the countywide medicines storage and distribution service to WAH NHS Trust, effectively balancing staffing resources and the needs of all the Trust and other customers.

Leading, motivating and day to day managing the team of pharmacy Stores and Stock Distribution staff at WRH ensuring they actively and effectively contribute to the aims of the service, are trained and assessed as competent and are aware of the expectations of them.

Ensuring medicines ordered are received, processed and stored correctly within the necessary timescales using the Pharmacy Computer System.

Ensuring all requisitions and orders for medicines are processed and issued to all WAH NHS Trust service users correctly within the necessary timescales using the Pharmacy Computer System.

Ensuring that all SOPs, policies and guidelines relating to Stores and Stock Distribution services are implemented and complied with as an integral element of the pharmacy directorate clinical governance and risk management strategy.

Liaising with the Countywide Procurement Team to ensure the correct quantity of medicines are ordered and stocked at the WRH pharmacy for distribution to wards clinics and out patients.

Ensuring any stock outs or to follow items are reviewed and resolved with the procurement team rapidly and effectively, and any issues escalated to the Stores and Stock Distribution Manager Lead Technician, Dispensary Manager or higher.

To effectively and promptly complete any allocated actions as a result of any Shortages and Drug Alerts according to the departmental procedures escalating when required.

Assist in the implementation of the Trusts performance management system for the WRH Stores and Stock Distribution staff and services to ensure that these services are of the highest standard, are risk managed and that all technical elements of the departmental Stores and Stock Distribution business plan are achieved.

Contributing to the development, content and delivery where appropriate of competency-based training and educational programmes for Stores & Stock Distribution staff. All training must be in line with national and regional standards and internally accredited for quality assurance, risk management and indemnity.

Ensuring all training programmes are delivered in a timely, effective manner and ensuring feedback is given to the department Practice Supervisors to ensure the training dashboard is updated and feedback given to the Pharmacy Faculty sub-group.

Undertaking quality audits such as annual Safe and Secure Handling of Medicine and Controlled Drugs according to Trust standards and methodology. Escalating concerns over non-compliance in an appropriate timeframe.

Undertake quality assurance required for the maintenance of the Wholesaler Dealer License.

Deputise for the Stores and Stock Distribution Manager and Dispensary Manager in their absence.

Act as a role model in all areas of work, supporting colleagues and liaising professionally with all staff including members of the departmental management team to provide the best possible care of patients.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE grade A to C in English, Maths and Science
  • NVQ level 2 in pharmacy

Desirable

  • Supervisory/team leadership course

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of successfully delivering technical pharmacy services as an assistant in a hospital or community setting.

Desirable

  • Experience of successfully delivering technical pharmacy services as a Senior/Lead pharmacy assistant in a hospital or community setting.
  • Experience of receiving and issuing pharmaceutical products.
  • Experience of leading a team and facilitating service delivery.
  • Experience of managing of staff including workload and personnel issues.

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Computer skills for using pharmacy computer systems and Microsoft office software.
  • Up to date knowledge of Health and Safety at Work

Personal qualities

Essential

  • Able to train, lead and motivate a team.
