Job responsibilities
Job Summary
The Primary Care Lead Nurse will provide leadership and coordination for the nursing team, ensuring high-quality patient care, professional development, and efficient service delivery. The role includes strategic planning, clinical oversight, and operational management to enhance patient services and optimise workflow within the practice.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Coordination
- Act as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) and provide peer support for all nursing-related matters.
- Oversee service delivery, ensuring clinical coverage aligns with service delivery requirements set by the partners.
- Plan and authorise annual leave, ensuring minimum service levels are met while coordinating with the Practice Manager.
- Lead nursing team meetings, including setting agendas, recording minutes, and addressing service delivery gaps.
- Represent the nursing team in internal and external meetings as required.
- Attend the Leads Meeting and contribute to broader practice planning.
Clinical Service & Development
- Ensure the nursing team actively delivers on Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) targets, Local Enhanced Services (LES), and other nurse-related objectives.
- Set targets for the team, monitor progress, and report outcomes to the Practice Manager / Business Manager.
- Conduct clinical reports and audits as required.
- Maintain oversight of vaccination programs (e.g., Flu, COVID, RSV), ensuring appropriate delegation of leadership roles within the nursing team.
- Ensure compliance with national policies and NHS strategic initiatives (e.g., NHS 10-year plan) relevant to nursing practice.
Training, Mentorship & Appraisals
- Lead the nursing teams training and professional development plan, balancing learning opportunities with service delivery needs.
- Oversee peer-to-peer support and mentoring within the team.
- Conduct nurse appraisals, providing feedback and identifying areas for professional growth.
- Coordinate training requirements, ensuring appropriate time allocation while minimizing disruption to patient services.
Strategic & Future Planning
- Identify opportunities to transfer appropriate work from GPs to nurses, increasing efficiency and capacity within the practice.
- Explore additional income streams, such as research initiatives, family planning services, and health checks.
- Contribute to long-term planning and innovation, ensuring nursing services align with future healthcare demands and practice growth.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Nurse with a valid NMC PIN
- Experience in primary care
- Leadership and team management experience
- Strong understanding of QOF, LES, and national healthcare policies
- Ability to balance service delivery with workforce development
- Excellent communication, organisational, and mentoring skills
Desirable
- Experience in service development and strategic planning
- Knowledge of additional income-generating healthcare services
- Experience conducting clinical audits and reporting
Experience
Essential
- Significant experience as a Practice Nurse in a primary care setting, with a deep understanding of general practice workflows and patient care.
