Job summary

We are looking to appoint a motivated Locum Consultant Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon, the post is based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen with elective colorectal operating mainly taking place at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli. This is a fixed term post for 12 months. The successful candidate will be joining a Health Board wide compliment of 22 Consultants, 12 substantive and 10 NHS locum consultants. This team is responsible for the provision of General Surgical services with specialty/special interests in breast, colorectal, upper Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy.

For the post we require experienced surgeons who are able to manage the spectrum of surgical problems encountered in a rural district General Hospital. The successful applicant will have wide experience in General Surgery and colorectal with laparoscopic skills.

Main duties of the job

To provide, with consultant colleagues (as appropriate) a service for General Surgery and colorectal, with the support of developing a sub-speciality interest to the hospitals and community so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To ensure the provision and delivery of a quality and safe clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all junior staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the health board's service plans
  • Core clinical expertise in General Surgery
  • Endoscopy and Laparoscopic Lower GI Surgery
  • Supporting and training multidisciplinary teams
  • To support the scheduled care directorate in meeting referral to treatment ministerial targets and SCP (standard cancer pathway) targets
  • A teaching and training role for medical undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Educational Supervisor role to Junior and SAS Level medical staff
  • To undertake regular multidisciplinary clinical audit and provide evidence based

Your job plan with consist of 10 sessions and will include Theatre, Endoscopy, Outpatients, Administration, SPA and Teaching between Glangwili and Prince Philip Hospitals. 2 sessions are allocated to covering the General Surgery on call 1 in 8 rota at Glangwili Hospital.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • -Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • -FRCS or qualification of an equivalent level
  • -Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills

Desirable

  • -Relevant higher degree e.g. MD; PhD; MSc
  • -JAG accreditation
  • -On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due within 6 months of interview date
  • -Or CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • -Broad based experience in eg. General Surgery
  • -Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • -Knowledge and participation in CPD

Desirable

  • -Experience of NHS
  • -Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • -Additional clinical qualification(s)

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • -Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice

Desirable

  • -Knowledge of risk management

Research

Essential

  • -Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes
