Job summary

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic consultant to join our team of Neonatologists at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The successful applicant will join an integrated team of 21 (19 NHS including neonatal transport and 2 Academic) Consultants, 1 Associate specialist, 2 Specialty doctors and 12 middle grade Trainees including neonatal grid and SPIN trainees providing neonatal care within Nottingham. The post will be based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The post is suitable for either an experienced Neonatologist with a CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent or a senior trainee within 6 months of CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent.

The appointee will have appropriate experience in neonatology and will either have a CCST/CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or be within 6 months of CCT or equivalent.

The position is full time or maximum part-time; part-time applicants will be considered.

About us

The Nottingham Neonatal Service serves well over 10,000 Nottingham births per year. It also provides the regional services to the northern part of East Midlands Operational Delivery Network (EM-ODN) comprising of 23,000 deliveries per year plus tertiary work from a total of around 32,000 births. The service admits over 1400 babies per year providing over 3500 intensive care days.

The Service provides the regional neonatal surgical and tertiary medical neonatal intensive care services.

Our two well-equipped and developed Neonatal Units have state of the art equipment, including integrated clinical monitoring, high frequency oscillation, inhaled nitric oxide and portable ultrasound. The Service is well supported by pharmacy, dietetics, physiotherapy, paediatric radiology and neuro-radiology services and has access to the full range of paediatric specialist opinion through the Nottingham Children's Hospital.

Job responsibilities

As one service, both campuses of the Nottingham Neonatal Service share staff, guidelines, education, clinical research and clinical governance. The Passport to Health Scheme for determining outcomes at follow up and combined Annual report demonstrate that the service views itself as one entity.

Nottingham Neonatal Service continues to enjoy an excellent reputation amongst the neonatal nurses. We are particularly proud of the recently completed review of the whole nursing structure, where emphasis is given to the development of competency-based practice.

Registration

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • Registration on the Specialist Register as sub specialist in Neonatal Medicine or within 6 months of CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent qualification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCPCH. Member of RCPCH

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MSc, MD or PHD)

Clinical Skills, Experience

Essential

  • Grid Training or equivalent training in Neonatal Medicine.
  • Extensive neonatal experience and advanced skills in neonatal medicine.
  • NLS Provider.
  • Significant neonatal transport experience.
  • Computing IT skills

Desirable

  • Having acted in or had experience of a consultant role.
  • Advanced skills in an area of special interest within neonatology.
  • Echocardiography training and experience.
  • NLS instructor. Formal training in neonatal transport.

Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduate doctors

Desirable

  • Completed teaching courses/training/qualification.
  • Appraisal and assessment training and skills

Audit Research

Essential

  • Experience of participation in clinical audit.
  • Understanding of clinical governance issues.
  • Attendance at neonatal scientific meetings.
  • Involvement in neonatal research
  • Ability to assess and apply evidence based research into everyday clinical practice. Evidence of having written/participated in the writing of evidence based guidelines. Commitment to development and adherence to departmental guidelines and protocols.

Desirable

  • Member of neonatal learned societies/national bodies.
  • Presentations at learned societies.
  • Author of peer reviewed publications.
  • Higher degree (MD or PHD)
