Job summary

To deliver care to patients with critical illness including:

General Medical patients

Medical and Surgical Cardiac patients

Manage patients on Extracorporeal Life Support

Specialist surgery including Neurosurgery; Liver transplant and Renal transplant

Contribution to joint Cardiology and Cardiothoracic meetings

Support the Embrace Transport service as a 5 PA commitment.

Main duties of the job

Work with Consultant colleagues in PCCU deliver the service including acute on call (this is currently 1 in 9 for PCCU). This includes acute ward rounds and unit management during normal working hours and regular out of hours commitment on the on-call rota.

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Childrens Hospital and across the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and with colleagues in District General Hospitals; Sheffield Childrens Hospital and other regional Transport services as well as the Regional Cardiac Transplant centre.

To contribute to infection control, research, teaching and new developments within the Paediatric Critical Care Unit. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs. SPA time constitutes 1.5 PAs.

About us

The Paediatric Critical Care at the Leeds General Infirmary is the regional lead centre. The Unit admits approximately 650 Level 3 PICU patients and 250 Level 2 patients a year of which approximately 150 are retrieved from our referring district general hospitals by Embrace, the regional paediatric and neonatal retrieval service. The Paediatric Critical Care supports a wide range of services including cardiac, neurosurgery and liver transplant. Cardiac surgery/ Cardiology account for over 350 cases per year. The LGI is a major neurology / neurosurgical centre with trauma, spinal, oncology and craniofacial and spinal surgical interests and is also the trauma and paediatric surgical centre for the city. Paediatric Critical Care also supports the onsite tertiary specialities including haematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant and nephrology. We are also one of the 3 liver transplant centres in the country.

Job responsibilities

This post is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Paediatric Critical Care Consultant, with a special interest in Cardiac Intensive Care. The post involves a 10 PA job plan on the Paediatric Critical Care Unit which includes first (PICU Lead), second (PICU Support) and third (Level 2) on shifts as well as a 1: 9 on call rota.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Membership Examination of the Royal College of Physicians or Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent post graduate qualification.

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree PhD MD

Essential

  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues

  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely

  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.

  • Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards)

Experience

Essential

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of the critically ill child
  • Evidence of specialist training in Paediatric Intensive Care including Paediatric Cardiac Intensive care and Extracorporeal life support
  • Must be able to demonstrate higher professional training in paediatrics, anaesthesia or other related speciality
  • Level 2 Child Protection training
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS

Desirable

  • Should have completed sub speciality training for 2 years in a rotation approved for Training in Paediatric intensive Care Medicine.
  • The applicant should have undertaken a cardiac fellowship or be able to demonstrate cardiac experience including ECMO above the minimum required for National GRID training in PIC
