The Community Engagement & Communications Officer for Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ) in Powys will play a key role in supporting individuals impacted by cancer. This role will focus on collaborating with local communities, healthcare providers, and third sector support organisations to gather user insights and experience that will support and inform the delivery of a support system tailored to the needs of people living with, or affected by, cancer in Powys.
Main duties of the job
Identify and connect with individuals, and communities, affected by cancer to ensure their voices are heard, valued and have influence throughout all areas of the programme.
Responsible for supporting the Programme Lead in the development and implementation of the Engagement Strategy and plan to ensure successful engagement with key stakeholders including the people living with or affected by cancer, public, patients, and staff to support the delivery of the programme.
Support the overall co-ordination and delivery of engagement and communication activities using tact and persuasion skills to gain the support and engagement of stakeholders.
Support the Programme Lead to scope the current provision of cancer information & support services, collaborating with stakeholders to support the development of an improved model of integrated personalised cancer information and support. This will include mapping existing Cancer information services and resources and helping to gain an understanding of the inherent needs of those affected by a cancer diagnosis and how the Programme can improve the experience for those and their loved ones.
Link with existing networks where user involvement influences the quality of cancer services design, development and delivery and make links with new networks. Develop user involvement working groups with partner organisations to deliver effective and inclusive user involvement on every level in the programme.

Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential
- Educated to degree level in relevant subject or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area
- Extensive knowledge of specialist area, acquired through post graduate diploma, or equivalent experience, or training
- Understanding of stakeholder mapping and development of audience and channel strategies, and proven ability to engage and communicate with a wide range of audiences
- Understanding of engagement and qualitative & quantitative research techniques
- Good knowledge of Microsoft packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook
Desirable
- Understands how to convey information through creative social media campaigns and the links to traditional communications channels
- Understanding of the role of communications and/or engagement via digital channels in an organisation
- Understanding of strategic communication and/or engagement planning
- Understanding of writing for websites
- Understanding of the role of internal communications and engagement in an organisation
- Knowledge of layout and design principles

- Experience of leading and delivering communications and engagement plans

- Experience of establishing systems and processes to ensure effective recording, monitoring and evaluation of engagement activities

- Excellent IT and advanced keyboard skills for publications, communication and engagement materials, presentations, processing documents etc

- Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks
- Using technology for community engagement, including social media, and virtual meeting platforms
- Work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and a proactive approach to problem-solving
- Experience working with rural or remote communities
- Excellent presentation skills

- Knowledge of Powys' specific health landscape and the challenges unique to rural cancer care delivery
- Basic video filming and editing skills
- Webpage and social media skills
- Ability to speak Welsh

- Access to a vehicle, as substantial travel within Powys will be required
